Dear St. Edward’s University Community,

After a careful review, the Board of Trustees has identified two finalists for the Interim President position. Each finalist will visit campus next week, on Tuesday, April 21, and Wednesday, April 22, to meet with University leadership and representatives from our shared governance groups, including faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Both finalists are accomplished, mission-aligned leaders with demonstrated success guiding universities through transition while protecting academic quality, student experience and institutional momentum. They are:
  • Thomas M. Mitzel, Ph.D, who served for five years as President of Dickinson State University in North Dakota and four years as President of Kentucky Wesleyan College.
  • Matthew D. Shank, Ph.D., who served for seven years as President of Marymount University in Virginia, which was founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM).
Reaching this point reflects the thoughtful and constructive engagement we have received from across the St. Edward’s community. Your questions, perspectives and insights have helped shape the Board’s priorities and decision points throughout. In partnership with AGB Search, we evaluated a strong, diverse pool of candidates and advanced leaders with prior presidential experience, skill and judgment to guide the University with clarity and care.

Shared governance leaders and representatives who meet with the finalists will be invited to provide structured feedback that will be shared with the Board to inform our selection in early May. We anticipate the selected Interim President will begin a one-month transition on June 1 and assume the role on July 1. The interim appointment will be for up to two years, during which the University will launch the search for our next permanent president.

In the weeks ahead, please be assured that the Board’s direction is steady and our expectations are clear. We are safeguarding continuity of leadership, sustaining momentum on our priorities, and positioning St. Edward’s University to move forward with strength, purpose and unity.
