Tulane University has signed a purchase and sale agreement for the former Charity Hospital building, a major step toward transforming the long-vacant landmark into a center for research and education. Under the plan, Tulane will occupy more than 650,000 square feet of the historic structure, creating a new home for the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the Tulane University Innovation Institute, while also housing multiple floors of cutting-edge research space for interdisciplinary research teams from these units and the Tulane School of Medicine. The project will bring approximately 700 researchers into the building. 

The $500 million project is expected to generate a $1.2 billion economic impact during redevelopment, create approximately 7,300 jobs and produce $10.5 million in state tax revenue. Once completed, the project is projected to support more than 2,400 permanent jobs and generate an annual economic impact of $530 million. Tulane University Police Department's (TUPD) Operation Safe Package helps reduce package theft in neighborhoods surrounding the university's uptown and downtown campuses. As part of the initiative, officers monitor areas with frequent deliveries and, when possible, move unattended packages out of sight or temporarily secure them until residents can retrieve them. Beyond protecting deliveries, the program increases officer visibility throughout the uptown perimeter, helping deter other crimes and enhance overall neighborhood safety. Crime across Tulane's campuses declined 26% in 2025 and is down 58% over the last five years. 

While some students are away for the summer, Tulane University is using the quieter months to complete maintenance and infrastructure projects across its uptown campus, including repairs to the Diboll Parking Garage, a new roof for Stanley Thomas Hall and upgrades to utilities and building systems. Read more about what's happening on campus this summer. 

In addition, the university continues to strengthen storm resilience across its campuses by maintaining drainage infrastructure and regularly clearing storm drains around the campus perimeter. Tulane is also advancing the Unified Green initiative, which will increase green space and improve stormwater management on the uptown campus.

Neighborhood residents can take advantage of membership opportunities at Tulane University’s Reily Student Recreation Center, located on the uptown campus. The facility includes fitness equipment, an indoor pool, tennis courts, group exercise classes and wellness programming, along with access to outdoor recreation spaces.
