Spring Spiritual Formation Retreat Registration Now Open!

Join Friends from across Baltimore Yearly Meeting for the next Spiritual Formation Retreat, May 1-3, at the beautiful Shepherd's Spring Camp & Retreat Center near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on the C&O Canal. Now with lower-cost cabin and camping options! We will gather under the theme: What About Prayer? What does it mean to pray?  To hold in the Light? In these times we know, most of all, that we need to connect to the source of presence and love that guides and grounds us. There are many forms of prayer – come share and learn from other Friends as we seek to "sink down to the seed."

BYM Receives Mail from White House

This week, BYM received a form-letter and commemorative photograph from Donald Trump, thanking us for our "kind words... and encouragement." This mail appears to be in response to a recent letter from the BYM Working Group on Militarism and War, urging the President to renew the START nuclear disarmament treaty.

Pastoral Care for Trans Friends: A Note from the Desk of the General Secretary

During the years I served as a civil rights lobbyist in the North Carolina legislature, I grew close to my friend Simon*, a fellow lobbyist. Simon recently relocated to Baltimore, but at the time we met he was the only out transgender person in the NC capital building. We often laughed together about how people - from the security guards to the Democratic leadership - confused us for each other, even though we look nothing alike other than being short and masculine. And we shared long days of joy and of heartbreak as we worked together to defend the dignity of all people. This week, as I read about Kansas lawmakers revoking the driving licenses and birth certificates of trans people and courts and federal lawmakers working to strip trans adults of healthcare and even the ability to vote, I reached out to my friend Simon. "How do we even keep breathing?" I despaired. Simon responded with his characteristic grounding, sharing an artwork from his recent visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art. "This painting keeps me breathing. The sign on the coffee shop next door saying 'ICE not welcome here' keeps me breathing. The warmth and sun today keep me breathing. We remind each other to breathe."

These are unprecedented times for our transgender Friends, family, neighbors, and loved ones. The fear (and fury) feel bottomless. And still, we can remind each other to breathe with every "I love you." Below are a few timely resources for loving the trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people in our lives and Meetings.

  • Friends Journal March Issue is all about trans people and the Religious Society of Friends
  • This article by Ted Heck (Richmond) - BYM's incoming Presiding Clerk
  • 50 Things You Can Do for Trans Rights
  • Trans Spiritual Care Initiative
  • 7 Ways Quaker Meetings to Welcome Trans & Non-Binary Friends
  • On March 29th, BYM is co-hosting a Quaker Trans Day of Visibility gathering - online and in-person at Swarthmore College in Philadelphia. Ten authors from the March 2026 Friends Journal special issue on gender and sexual identities join trans and nonbinary moderators for facilitated deep engagement with what their stories ask of our meetings, our witness, and each other.
