Peleș Castle, Romania
SALUT Bruce!

I recently returned from a captivating journey to my home country, Romania. It is a beautiful land that seamlessly blends ancient history, breathtaking landscapes, and a warm, welcoming spirit - and I did truly feel like I was home! I was so glad I made the trip and while not new to me, this relatively hidden gem of Europe offered a truly unforgettable experience and an interesting perspective for which I was pleasantly surprised.
From top left through bottom right; Anca (far right), mom and sister in traditional Romanian costumes, appetizer: plǎcintǎ cu brânzǎ (cheese pie), Meron Cișmigiu Coffee Cafe, Traditional Romanian dancers, Biserica Sfântul Dumitru Romanian Orthodox Church.
Before I share my own experience here, I wanted to share a little bit of history. Once hailed as the "Little Paris" of Eastern Europe, Bucharest's golden age blossomed with elegant architecture, inspired by the French Beaux-Arts style. Iconic landmarks like the Triumphal Arch and the Palace of Telephones rose from the ground, symbols of a thriving metropolis.

Unfortunately, World War II and the subsequent communist era cast a long shadow over Bucharest's architectural heritage. The city’s Old Town, in particular, fell into disrepair. It wasn't until the early 2000s that efforts to restore its former glory truly began. Despite many hurdles, Bucharest’s Old Town is steadily reclaiming its enchanting past, one restored building at a time.

Most of my time in Romania, was spent in the heart of Bucharest. I was immediately enchanted by the city's eclectic charm, a harmonious blend of Art Nouveau architecture, Soviet-era buildings, and modern skyscrapers. One such building was my hotel,
The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection*. The building was previously known as the Marmorosch Blank Bank Palace, and was transformed into a luxury hotel, preserving its historical essence.  Another example is the Meron Cișmigiu building, housing a cafe noted in the photograph above. The building is an architectural marvel located on Elizabeth Boulevard, also known as the "Broadway" of Bucharest.

Another colossal structure, the
Palace of Parliament, is a must-see, as is the Old Town, where I savored delicious traditional Romanian cuisine in cozy, atmospheric restaurants. And the traditional dancers brought back cherished memories of my own childhood, adorned in traditional Romanian dress, the stylish combo of Romanian embroidered Dacian vest and blouse!

My solo exploration also was a time for renewed self discovery! As I wandered through the cobblestone streets of Bucharest, I discovered a delightful mix of charming shops, resturants and quaint cafes nestled among the remnants of architectural wonders in various states of repair. The city's vibrant spirit of renewal was palpable, showcasing both its historical beauty and the ongoing efforts to revitalize its urban landscape. Romania is on a trajectory as a formidable haven for travelers and I cannot wait to one day return to see first hand all of the wonderful changes and growth.

And while I cemented my journey into exploring Old town, Romania has so much more to offer - fantastic cities, castles, and stunning natural beauty.

And I would be remiss in not sharing the culinary delights that Romania had to offer! Romanian cuisine is a flavorful adventure, with hearty dishes like sarmale (cabbage rolls), mici (grilled meat rolls), and mǎmǎligǎ (one of my favorite Romanian words known to us as polenta). I indulged in delicious local wines and discovered the joy of traditional Romanian spirits at a traditional restaurant worth noting,
Vatra.

Romania is a country that has my heart and will steal your heart as well. Its rich history, diverse landscapes, and warm people create an irresistible allure. If you're dreaming of a unique and authentic travel adventure, Romania should be at the top of your list. We're eager to share more details and recommendations to help you plan your perfect Romanian getaway.

Fun Fact about Romania: Did you know that Romania is home to the largest continuous forest in Europe, the Carpathian Mountains? This pristine wilderness is a haven for wildlife and offers endless opportunities for hiking, trekking, and nature lovers.
