School Lunch Hero Day: May 5, 2023
On the first Friday in May, we celebrate School Lunch Hero Day! School Lunch Hero Day recognizes hardworking school nutrition professionals and the difference they make every day.  Plan to celebrate your School Lunch Heroes by visiting the TDA School Lunch Hero Day webpage for fun downloadable resources. Join us by posting on social media with the hashtag #SchoolLunchHeroDay!

Pledge now for the Farm Fresh Challenge!
TDA's Farm Fresh Challenge runs from October 1-31 and is open to both NSLP and CACFP operators during the same month! Learn more about the Challenge to Eat Local, Teach Local, and Be Social at SquareMeals.org/FarmFreshChallenge and begin planning for your participation in October!

Encourage High School Students to Apply for the HART Program
The Health Ambassadors for a Ready Texas (HART) program empowers exceptional high school students to promote healthy school meals and Texas agriculture among their peers. Student applications are now open through May 5, 2023. 2023 Team Nutrition Grant Supporting Nutrition Education for School-Aged Children
USDA has opened applications for Fiscal Year 2023 Team Nutrition Grants, which support nutrition education for school-aged children and extend nutrition education efforts beyond the cafeteria. SFAs may apply for up to $1 million each in grant funding. Applications are due by Monday, May 22, 2023. FNS expects to announce awards in August 2023. Internet Services Available to All Households with Kids at CEP Schools
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provides eligible households discounts off their internet bills and eligible devices and is available to households in which  a child receives free or reduced-price school meals. Therefore, under the ACP rules, every household with a child attending a school participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the NSLP and SBP is eligible for ACP benefits.

Summer Materials Are On the Way To Assist With School's Meeting USDA Requirement

The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) is still in the process of sending posters (3 per school) and parent information cards (1 per enrolled student) to every school food authority (SFA) in Texas to assist them in fulfilling a National School Lunch Program requirement to notify students and their families about the availability of summer meals. The posters must be displayed on campus and the parent information cards must be distributed to each student immediately upon the shipment’s arrival.

Approved Sites and Sponsors Summer Outreach Materials Now Available - Order Today!
The Summer Meal Programs provide healthy and nutritious meals after the school year ends to children 18 years and younger and enrolled students with disabilities up to 21 years old. The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) has developed no-cost, online resources and printed materials you can use to promote the availability of these meals for families in need. Make sure you are utilizing new materials this year. Please visit the Summer Meals Resources linked in the title above to order no-cost, print materials today!

Grant Application Opening Soon - April 10, 2023
Are you a Small and/or Rural School Food Authority and participate in NSLP and/or SBP? The USDA Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative and Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) is teaming up to offer competitive grants to support efforts in improving the nutritional quality of school meals! Be sure to visit AFHK during MegaCon May 9-11th for information on how to apply!

Oliver Foundation Healthy Choices Grants - $750-$5000
Grants will be awarded to Texas non-profit organizations, agencies and schools that demonstrate the greatest need and likelihood of a sustainable impact on children's nutrition and activity levels through innovative programs.

2023 NSLP Financial Report

The 2023 NSLP Financial Report was due March 31, 2023. The deadline has been extended to April 28, 2023. 

Application Updates - Important NSLP and SSO Application Dates
The NSLP application for School Year (SY) 2023-2024 opens on April 15, 2023.
The SSO applications must be submitted by May 31, 2023.

America’s Healthiest Schools Award: Applications due April 18, 2023
Healthier Generation’s America’s Healthiest Schools Award celebrates schools for implementing best practices that support the physical, mental, and social-emotional health needs of the learning community. Schools nationwide are encouraged to apply to be recognized in one or more America's Healthiest Schools topic areas. 

Food Service Management Companies (FSMCs)
CEs contracting with FSMCs must adhere to deadlines when submitting FSMC contracts and contract renewals to TDA.

Reminder: Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Deadline - June 30, 2023
The deadline to elect CEP for SY 2023-2024 is June 30, 2023.


Policy Updates and Compliance Reminders
Proposed Rule: Community Eligibility Provision- Increasing Options for Schools
Proposed Rule aimed at lowering the threshold for schools to participate in Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) from 40% to 25%.

Comment Period Extended for the Proposed Rule to Revise Nutrition Standards
On February 3, 2023, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), released the Proposed Rule Child Nutrition Programs: Revision to Meal Patterns Consistent With the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Contracting Entities in the Child Nutrition Programs are encouraged to comment on the Proposed Rule, and the deadline to do so has been extended to May 10. Note that a Final Rule is not scheduled for release until 2024, after all public comments have been analyzed. It is subject to change based on the comments received. Universal Breakfast Program Waivers
The Universal Breakfast Program Waiver application opened on March 15. School district campuses and open-enrollment charter schools participating in NSLP in which 80 percent or more of the students qualify for a free or reduced-price breakfast must offer a free breakfast to each student or seek a waiver from TDA, as required by Senate Bill 376. TDA notified all mandated schools by email in February 2022. Click the title above to read more.

2023 Seamless Summer Option (SSO) Reviews
CEs that received an AR in school year 2022-2023 and are operating the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) in summer 2023 will receive an SSO review.
