Storm Front: Last weekend's tornadoes killed at least eight and devastated parts of Southwest Michigan and Oklahoma (including Beggs, in the Tulsa listening area), with another round of severe weather predicted for tonight (3/10). WNWN/Battle Creek, MI Brand Mgr./morning host JD Justice reports that a tornado came within 500 feet of the home of one team member who lives in hard hit Union City, but everyone on the staff stayed safe. "We obviously did weather reports, and [that] employee came on the morning show to talk about what listeners can do to help," Justice says. "We are currently working towards a fundraising solution with clients ... to benefit the residents of all four towns that were affected."
In Tulsa, KXBL Brand Mgr. Dena Fletcher says, "Friday night we simulcast our sister TV station, [KOTV], which is in the same building, for three straight hours. Every time we thought we could return to regular programming, another area of rotation developed in our listening area. We’re really lucky to have that resource during severe storm season. Tonight looks like it could be messy, too."
KWEN/Tulsa D
ir./Branding & Programming and morning host Matt Bradley says as the storms approached, "We started relaying information about where they were popping and when to expect them, but it became so intense we opted to simulcast our sister station, KRMG. They are much better prepared to handle coverage like that. I was at home helping Karla [Cantrell], who was on the air. If Karla had to go to a shelter, I would be able to relay information from home on the air." Bradley ran the EAS alerts and monitored the National Weather Service as well as storm chasers on a scanner, sending that info back to the station, while Cantrell assisted sister station KRAV with its simulcast. As for the clean-up efforts, Bradley says, "We have discussed a fundraiser for the victims, but we usually wait for agencies like the Red Cross to let us know what is needed before we put a plan together. We can quickly mobilize, and our audience has always been great at responding."
