| 🤔Who do you want to determine Georgetown’s future?
The state legislature is considering bills that will continue to erode our City Council’s ability to manage our own community--creating a one-size-fits-all approach to City government where Georgetown would look like Austin, Houston, or any other City in Texas.
Key bills up for committee hearings this week in the Texas Legislature include ones that would allow:
📜the state to override local city ordinances, including decisions on zoning, noise, health and safety, land use and development (SB 2858 and SB 3016)
📜manufactured homes to be put on lots in any residentially zoned area with few restrictions (SB 785)
📜developers to hire third party inspectors to approve plats, developments, building permits, and more (HB 23)
During a recent hearing on a bill, a state rep from the Houston area said cities are "creatures of the state," and that he was elected to override the decisions of local city councils. In Georgetown, our residents elect City Council members who live here, understand our community, and are directly accountable to their neighbors. We believe local leaders should have the authority to advocate for the priorities of the people they represent, with unique solutions that are specific to our issues, and not have important decisions made at the state level.
⚖️Where do you want decisions about Georgetown made? At the state capitol or in Georgetown? Would you rather have representation that meets regularly or have to appeal to members of a body elected from all over the state that only meets every two years for six months? Contact your state reps today to share your thoughts on these bills.
