dean's note

It is my great pleasure to greet you as the new dean of the College of Arts and Science. Like our newest students who arrived on campus last week, I join the Vanderbilt community with excitement, hope, and a desire to learn and grow. I have spent the past 25 years as a researcher, instructor, and university administrator. As you’ll hear in the video below, I am a strong believer in the unique value of universities. No other institution in the world is solely committed to the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge. And no institution does that more consistently and remarkably than Vanderbilt, where we explore and debate ideas, innovate across disciplines and traditions, and develop solutions to complex challenges. I look forward to supporting the success of the College of Arts and Science and to helping ensure that it flourishes and grows in new ways.

With best wishes,

Jason Merchant
