Poetry Out Loud Registration Is Open
|
Teachers can register now to hold a Poetry Out Loud competition in their school, classroom, or youth organization. This annual, nationwide poetry reciting competition gives 9th- through 12th-grade students the chance to dig deep into great works of poetry, and the winner will go on to compete for cash prizes and the chance to represent our state at the national finals in Washington, D.C. this coming spring.

Free Folk Arts Workshops Available
|
Our Living Folk Arts Education workshop series is accepting applications. This free program allows folk artists from the UA&M Teaching Artists roster to offer hands-on workshops to schools and community groups around the state. Groups can select from a wide range of traditional arts workshops taught by Utah folk artists. You can hold a workshop at the Chase Home Museum in Salt Lake City or arrange to have the artist come to your location.

Join us for a series of hands-on workshops in the art of creating and decorating traditional sugar skulls, as well as other art and craft projects inspired by international celebrations. Teaching Artist Noemi Balcazar-Hernandez leads two upcoming workshops of 90 minutes, suitable for ages five and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
— Saturday, Oct. 11, 2 p.m.: Chapman Library, Salt Lake City (this workshop will be accessible to Spanish speakers)
— Saturday, Oct. 25, 12 noon: Tooele County Library, Tooele

Explore a sweet tradition of honoring life and loved ones, and take home your own decorated sugar skull! In this hands-on workshop, you will discover the tradition of decorating calaveras de azúcar (sugar skulls) and learn the meaning behind the vibrant colors and designs as you use royal icing to create a personal piece of folk art. Join us Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.

This grant provides up to $5,000 to help traditional artists from Utah’s ethnic, Native, rural, and occupational communities share their skills with apprentices from the same cultural background. The grant helps mentors teach their craft, ensuring these valuable traditions continue. Applications must be submitted jointly by the mentor and one or two apprentices. All grant funds will be paid directly to the mentor. Applications close Nov. 17.

Our friends at Utah Humanities are marking 28 years of strengthening Utah communities through reading, literature, and conversations. The Book Festival offers virtual and in-person events across Utah.

Performing Arts Regional Booking Conference Scholarship Support
|
Our Performing Arts Program provides scholarships for presenters or performing artists to attend regional booking conferences. These conferences provide opportunities for performing artists to market their art to presenters. Booking conferences are also exceptional places to receive professional development and network with others in the field. The scholarship supports up to $1,000 in registration costs only. Some upcoming booking conferences include:
— Oct. 5-7: International Entertainment Buyers Association
— Oct. 9-12: Folk Alliance Region - West
— Oct. 10-12: Montana Performing Arts Consortium
— Oct. 13-16: Arts Northwest
— Nov. 12-14: Rocky Mountain Association of Fairs
— Jan. 9-13: Association of Performing Arts Presenters

TYA Tour Development Collective
|
The TYA Tour Development Collective (TYA TDC) is a nationwide initiative bringing together performing arts venues and arts professionals to champion the creation of new theatrical works for youth and family audiences. The TYA TDC supports U.S. artists and companies with funds to help develop new projects to tour nationally. The collective is looking for new members and applicants; here is a one-sheet with more information.

| Emergency Preparedness Webinars
|
The Performing Arts Readiness (PAR) project is offering free emergency preparedness webinars. Designed specifically for performing arts organizations, these sessions emphasize that effective preparation enables quicker, more coordinated responses to crises, supports timely reopening, and facilitates a smoother return to normal operations.

Statewide Annual People's Choice Award
|
As we wrap up this year’s Statewide Annual, we have one more fun announcement: This year’s People’s Choice Award goes to "Mind in Two 25A1," by McGarren Flack, oil on aluminum composite, 2022. Congratulations, McGarren!
Thank you to all the artists — from those who applied to those who were selected — who took part in this year’s Statewide Annual! And thank you to the Southern Utah Museum of Art for hosting. What an incredible space! If you were not able to make it to the exhibition, don’t fret. Keep an eye out for the soon-to-be released virtual gallery!
