Iverson named School of Medicine Basic Sciences associate dean for faculty
Tina Iverson (Pharmacology) has been named associate dean for faculty of the School of Medicine Basic Sciences effective July 1. She will succeed Alyssa Hasty (Molecular Physiology and Biophysics), who is joining the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, as vice provost and senior associate dean for faculty affairs and career development.

Osheroff earns medical education lifetime achievement award
Neil Osheroff (Biochemistry) was awarded the Lillian B. Nanney Award for Outstanding Service to the VUSM/VUMC Community of Educators by the Academy for Excellence. Osheroff is a nationally and internationally recognized educator, having given more than 400 invited educational and scientific presentations in 42 different countries.

Transformative agreements save authors beaucoup bucks in open access feesVanderbilt University’s Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries have successfully negotiated a series of “transformative agreements” with major scientific publishers that cover some or all of the open-access fees previously charged to corresponding Vanderbilt authors. Authors should not have to take any special action to request coverage of fees other than using their Vanderbilt email when submitting papers for review to partner journals.

- The Global AMR Summit 2024, taking place Oct. 9–10 in Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking presentations that are broadly focused on the following key topics:
- The future of drug development and vaccines to combat infections
- New developments in protein folding to curb antimicrobial resistance
- Latest research in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy as a molecular tool
- The role of AI in the design and development of next-generation antimicrobials
- Advances in antimicrobial peptides and the development of novel antibiotics
- Global surveillance programs and stewardship platforms to control AMR
The Global AMR Summit 2024 offers scientific and business solutions in antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial strategies across various therapeutic platforms, with a unique emphasis on emerging technologies and preparing for the future of clinical care.
- The CSB/MBTP Green Team collaborated on the Vanderbilt Sustainable Labs program with Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability to offer guidance for laboratory members to reduce the environmental impact of their lab activities. - The National Institutes of Health are in the process of overhauling their grant review criteria. Although the actual grant application process will remain mostly the same, they are switching to new forms. Read more about the Simplified Review Framework.
- The Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization has introduced a new
tool that makes it easy for faculty to bring forward innovative ideas that have the potential for patenting and commercialization. The recently introduced online Concept Submission Form eases the initial steps for submitting innovative ideas to CTTC.
- BioRender Premium access was renewed for Basic Sciences through Sept. 2025. Basic Sciences researchers can log in through our portal. If you can't log in, submit your VUNetID to get access. Questions? Email Lorena Infante Lara.
