CHP Students Rise to the Occasion
Back in May, Kyle Podeszwik, EMT-P, and his partner were en route with a patient to Butterworth Hospital. During transport, the patient’s condition deteriorated, and they had to pull to the side of the road. Elizabeth (Libbi) Brandes, a GVSU senior in Cardiovascular Sonography (CVS), happened to be walking down Michigan Street after her clinical at Meijer Heart Center. Brooke Thompson, a GVSU Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) Class of 2024 student, was also on an assignment close by when they both saw the ambulance urgently pull over. Without hesitation, Brooke and Libbi rushed to the back of the ambulance to assist, so Kyle and his partner could perform further interventions on the patient.
Both stepped up to the challenge, with it being the first big emergency for Libbi, and Brooke just having completed Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training. “As an ACLS instructor myself, their skill set and willingness to work as part of a team are exactly what we as healthcare providers look for when working with new and training providers both in the field and in the hospital,” said Kyle. He continued to say that “both Elizabeth and Brooke’s skills were phenomenal, and they maintained the professionalism and team-oriented attitude needed for such a situation.”
Kyle reached out to both Katelyn Lowman, CVS professor and clinical director, and Jill Ellis, PAS professor and program director, so they would have the opportunity to share the story and commend Libbi and Brooke for their efforts. The College of Health Professions is thoroughly impressed and proud of the actions of our students. Podeszwik will also be speaking with his director to issue both Libbi and Brooke an award for their actions.
Way to go Libbi and Brooke!

PAS Students Show Compassion & Support

Following the tragic shooting at Michigan State University (MSU), our Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) students showed compassion and support for the MSU PA students with a special delivery of "insomnia" cookies. The gesture was very appreciated!

Community Partner Engagement

Public Health Highlights
Public Health Curriculum Spans the Globe in PH 632
The Master of Public Health (MPH), health promotion emphasis course, Social Campaigning and Distribution (PH 632) offered students community partnerships that spanned the globe this winter semester!
The assignment, a culminating group project to design a five-phase social marketing campaign for a community partner, connected with four organizations from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Kenya, West Africa.
Students partnered with Michigan Organization for Adolescent Sexual Health (Lansing, MI), Mission to Heal (Kenya), GVSU Family Health Centers, RFH Convenience Clinic (Grand Rapids, MI), and Catherine's Health Center (Grand Rapids, MI) to create a transferable campaign, including marketing and social media materials that were based on the community partner's needs.
"Public Health has over 300 established community partners connected to our program. This is a feature unique to our program and our faculty team takes pride in showcasing it throughout our curriculum," stated Dr. Ranelle Brew, MPH program director.
PH 505 Collaborates with KCHD on Root Cause Analysis
Dr. Katie Barnhart and all cohort 11 MPH students welcomed Maris Brummel and Janine O'Donnell from our community partner, Kent County Health Department (KCHD) to discuss their community planning efforts. Both the hybrid and traditional students collaborated with KCHD for the second time in MPH program coursework. KCHD is currently launching the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment. They explained their ongoing application of the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) framework, and students completed a root cause analysis for all previously highlighted needs. A root cause analysis goes beyond looking at social determinants of health by thinking deeply about what systems exist. Cohort 11 students will continue to work with KCHD in at least one additional MPH course.
Human Resources Management Professionals Encompassing Awareness, Assistive Technology Knowledge, and Workplace Accommodations
An employer's attitude in the workplace is essential and is often associated with hiring behaviors, in addition to their required awareness and knowledge of providing reasonable assistive technology (AT) workplace accommodations (WA) for persons with disabilities (PwD). Researchers conducted a focus group to gain insight to develop a survey that assesses small to midsize companies' awareness and knowledge of AT-WA best practices used by human resources management professionals for employing persons with low vision or blindness.
MPH Associate Professor Julia VanderMolen, Ph.D., researched to examine the benefits of AT and disabilities in public health. As a Board of Trustees member of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI), she co-presented at the 2023 Michigan Chapter Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (MAER) conference on ABVI's collaborative employment program in the presentation entitled, "Employment Initiatives-Educating Employers to Hire Blind and Low Vision (LV) Workers." Gilda's Club of Grand Rapids-Supper Together Program
As part of their community engagement assignment this semester, Dr. Sarah Nechuta's PH 610 (Cancer Epidemiology) class provided dinner for local Gilda's Club members and their families who are impacted by cancer. Approximately 30 attendees enjoyed a spread of soups, salads, and homemade bread. After dinner, Gilda's Club members attended cancer support groups, and the students received a tour and learned more about the mission and history of Gilda's Club.

Merging Skills: Cardiovascular Sonography and Exercise Science awarded FTLC Teaching Innovation Grant
Cardiovascular Sonography Program Director Katelyn Lowman, and Exercise Science Professor Stephen Glass, are excited at the prospects of merging skills developed by Lowman's sonography students, and Glass's cardiac rehabilitation students. They will use Exercise Science's stress testing lab on the Allendale campus to perform or practice "stress echo" testing using a portable mini-echo device. "I'm excited to have this interprofessional opportunity for our students!"
These portable mini-echo devices are small commercial handheld ultrasound units that can connect to a tablet or phone and display real-time ECHO images. They can be used within the stress testing environment, allowing ultrasound students to perform ECHO imaging immediately after a stress test on classroom participants. Our students will be able to see the procedure, timing, and visual output from the tests, and the images can be saved, stored, and shared for instructional purposes.
This opportunity provides Exercise Science students real-time contact with ECHO imaging and how the procedure blends with the diagnostic stress testing they currently learn, and for Cardiovascular Sonography students to demonstrate skills they are learning. It's a great opportunity for students to teach students!

Medical Terminology and Introduction to Health Care
Credits part of North Ed and GVSU Agreement
Theresa Bacon-Baguley, associate dean of research,
College of Health Professions,
GVSU (third from right)
Through an agreement between Northwest Education Services Intermediate School District (North Ed) and GVSU, 2023 high school seniors will earn direct credit to GVSU. Officials from both schools signed an agreement deeming North Ed’s Health Sciences classes equivalent to GVSU's two, three-credit classes — Medical Terminology and Introduction to Healthcare.
With 135 students broken up into six cohorts in North Ed's Health Sciences program, students learn skills relevant to careers in healthcare, such as anatomy and physiology, medical ethics, and law and medical terminology.
Theresa Bacon-Baguley, associate dean in the College of Health Professions, was among the GVSU faculty who conducted the curriculum review. It was nearly identical to what the university offers, making it an “easy decision” to give students direct college credit, Bacon-Baguley said. The agreement will give students the confidence to pursue higher education, which is part of GVSU’s greater mission. She is also a big proponent of bringing educational opportunities to rural areas like northern Michigan, and through agreements like this, as well as through Northwestern Michigan College’s University Center, where GVSU has offered classes for the past two decades.
GVSU Presents Rural Health Awards to Munson

OUTSTANDING RURAL HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATION AWARD
Munson Healthcare has been a collaborative partner with GVSU in offering clinical education as well as co-hosting the Health Forum of Northern Michigan since its inception in 2019.
RURAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER
The Munson Healthcare Trauma and Acute Surgery Team was nominated by GVSU's Physician Assistant Studies Program. GVSU Scribe Academy Celebrates Eighth Anniversary
May 5 was the eighth anniversary of the first GVSU Scribe Academy cohort, where six students were placed into the Butterworth Emergency Department care teams as medical scribes. They forged the way for many other GVSU students and since then, the GVSU Scribe Academy has received over 2,000 applications and graduated 600 medical scribes!
GVSU’s partner, Helix Scribe Solutions, continues to place students across the West Michigan region in emergency departments and medical offices, that include orthopedics, primary care, pain management, and more. Students gain meaningful clinical experience at the bedside while assisting providers with documentation in the patient's electronic medical record. Medical scribes contribute to the efficiency of healthcare teams while clocking hours of valuable clinical experience that contribute to their graduate school applications.
Helix Scribe Solutions has consistently invested in students by providing free theory and clinical training to those who qualify through the GVSU Scribe Academy. The training leads to part-time and full-time paid medical scribe positions. The work is flexible around student schedules, accommodating full-time students and gap-year alumni. Learn more about GVSU's Scribe Academy!
