Buddhist Worship
Tuesdays during term, 1:00 p.m., Emory Interfaith Center Shrine Room, 1707 N Decatur Road
Welcome to the weekly Buddhist worship service where we recite traditional Buddhist chants/texts. We will gather in the Shrine Room of the Emory Interfaith Center for contemplation, worship, and discussion if there is any question regarding the practice/chant/text.
Chants/texts in Pali and English will be available. If you prefer a text in a different language (e.g. Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese, etc.) please reach out to Buddhist Chaplain Venerable Priya Sraman in advance at psraman@emory.edu. No prior Buddhist background is required to attend and we welcome all Emory students interested in learning more about Buddhism or connecting with the Buddhist community. Emory University Chaplaincy Recap: Muscogee Teach-In
On Friday, November 8, Emory University hosted the third-annual Muscgoee Teach-In at the Emory Student Center and on McDonough Plaza. The program included remarks by Emory and Muscogee leaders, Muscogee hymn-singing, a language lesson from the Mvskoke Language Program, a conversation with leaders and students from the College of Muscogee Nation, and a stomp dance led by Helvpe Ceremonial Ground Members. Emory University Chaplaincy Recap:
Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir Fall Concert 2024
On Saturday, November 9, the Emory Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir, under the direction of Mr. Maury Allums, a group that has been active on campus for nearly 40 years, held its annual Fall Concert in Cannon Chapel.
The evening included worship music from different Christian genres and featured special alumni guests, along with a special “Happy Birthday” song for Emory's Vice Provost Dr. Carol Henderson. After the music, the choir, students, faculty, staff, alumni, families, and guests enjoyed a light dinner in Brooks Commons to nourish bodies after the soul-nourishment of the concert.

Emory University Chaplaincy: Muslim-Jewish Relations Course Presentation

This past week, Emory Muslim Chaplain Ustadh Rahimjon and Emory Jewish Chaplain Rabbi Jordan were invited to co-teach a course session on the history of Muslim-Jewish relations. Professor Craig Perry welcomed Emory’s Muslim and Jewish chaplains to speak about the work of building strong Muslim and Jewish partnerships on Emory’s campus and beyond.
The chaplains reflected on their own personal histories, as well as sharing traditional teachings from their faiths about the importance of respect and care for others. Students were invited to share their perspectives and to imagine new pathways for building a sense of solidarity and kinship between these two ancient traditions at Emory and beyond.

The Emory OSRL Student Worker Program provides the opportunity to learn about the multifaith work of the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life and to assist our dean, chaplains, and staff in fulfilling essential functions that support our programs and services. Responsibilities include hospitality and communications, data and record management, web and publications work, and special event staffing and support.

Aditi Wamorkar (she/her) is from Charlotte, NC, and is an Emory senior planning to graduate in spring 2025. She is working towards an NBB major and Religion minor. While at Emory, she has been involved in being an OSRL student worker, an NBB 201 TA, and a Labor Support Student Coordinator. What Aditi likes best about working at OSRL is “How at home I feel!” Her current super power is empathy, but the gift she’d like to have is teleportation. When not working or studying, you might find her doing something crafty or eating a cake donut.

Caron Lee (she/her) is from Peachtree Corners, Georgia, and is an Emory sophomore planning to graduate in spring 2027. She is working towards a Chemistry major on the pre-pharmacy track, with a nutrition science minor. While at Emory, she has been involved in the AHANA a capella, Partner's In Health Engage, and Remote Area Medical. What Caron likes best about working at OSRL is “The people.” Her current super power is acts of service, but the gift she'd like to have is the power to eat as much as she wants without getting full. When not working or studying, you might find her singing or eating chocolate molten lava cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

International Community Friday Lunch (ICFL) is a long-standing collaboration between the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference: The Spirit of Justice and the Black Christian Political Witness Monday, November 18, 12:00-1:30 pm., Jones Room on the 3rd floor of Woodruff Library
As contentious as the 2024 presidential election has been, it is not completely new in US history. Black people have always faced discriminating political choices when it comes to their civil rights and well-being. Black Christians have drawn on their faith throughout the Black freedom struggle to resist injustice. This talk draws on themes from the Spirit of Justice book and the historical witness of the Black Church to speak to our present-day political landscape.
