Student Spotlight: Monserrat Lopez Villagomez
Monserrat is a first-generation student in the Political Science/Pre-law program. Her anticipated graduation is May 2026. She is in the Cook Honors College and is both a Promising Scholar and a Sutton Scholar. She is an IUP Ambassador, a Crimson Guide, and a resident assistant. Monserrat is the newly appointed president of the Latino Student Organization (LaSO), which is very meaningful to her. In this role, she plans to continue the programs and celebrations from past semesters while raising awareness of the organization and helping to make all members feel welcome and heard. She is an active member of the DEI Alliance and is currently helping with the upcoming Unity Ball. We thank you, Monserrat!
Staff Spotlight: Alan Baumler
Alan is a professor in the Department of History and teaches classes on the history and culture of Asia. He is one of the department’s specialists in China, and one of his areas of academic interest is modern Chinese history (i.e., opium, public health, aviation, gender, and military). He is the coordinator of the Asian Studies program, which provides students with multidisciplinary knowledge of the world’s largest, most populous, and most diverse continent. Alan is the advisor for the Anime Club, Asian Studies Club, Association of Korean-Cultural Interests, Japanese Student Association, Phi Alpha Theta, and South Asian Student Association. We thank you, Alan!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.

6:00 p.m.—Elkin Hall Great Room or via Zoom
Since the early 1800s, the Laurel Hill settlement, in what is now Laurel Ridge State Park near Johnstown, was home to an integrated community of Black, White, and Indigenous people. Today, the settlement cemetery is the most visible landmark, but a closer look reveals roads, foundations, and other evidence of 15 decades of life. An interdisciplinary team of students and faculty recently studied the settlement’s history and impact on the term “community” and will present this interesting topic.
