Student Spotlight: Prince Atsise
Prince is in the Student Affairs in Higher Education master’s degree program and will graduate this May. He recently obtained a master’s in administration in higher education from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. He works as a graduate assistant in the Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement, where he has spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at fostering a sense of belonging and support among students from diverse backgrounds. Some of those efforts include planning the many informational Lunch & Learn sessions, organizing the Crimson Blast event for DEI-associated student groups, assisting with the annual Lead@IUP leadership conference, and coordinating the Winter Celebration and Crimson Salute graduation ceremonies. He created the “My IUP Experience” event, in which students shared their unique campus experiences, and he facilitated a University College Success Series Workshop on building leadership skills and taught a first-year college adjustment class on the same topic. Prince serves as a board member for the Black Student League, Center for Teaching Excellence, IUP Community Standards, and Student Advisory Council in the College of Education and Communications. He is a graduate advisor for the Black Student League, a Crimson Scholars Circle meeting facilitator, and a graduate ambassador for the American College Personnel Association and the Placement Exchange, a platform under the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. We thank you, Prince!
Staff Spotlight: Jonathon Cooper
Jon is an associate professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and currently serves as the dean’s associate for Academic Affairs in the College of Health and Human Services. He is passionate about fostering a supportive learning environment for his students and believes that education thrives on diversity, equity, and inclusion. He actively champions social equity and civil rights awareness, both inside and outside the classroom. Jon has developed programs and educational opportunities and has brought renowned educators to IUP for faculty and staff to grow their inclusive teaching and support skills. He is hands-on and unmatched in his ability to break down barriers to success for those students dealing with the most complex and challenging issues. Jon is a valuable leader and contributor to the Care and Behavioral Intervention teams, he assists with community standards board hearings, and he serves as an academic standards officer. His dedication to his students’ success is evident in his commitment to creating a space in which everyone feels welcome, respected, and empowered to learn, grow, and succeed, both academically and personally. We thank you, Jon!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
