More than half of all Americans aged 80 or older either have cataracts or have had surgery to get rid of cataracts, a common eye condition that affects vision, especially as one ages. These cloudy areas occur in the eye's natural lens (clear part), which helps to focus light. Over time, cataracts can make one’s vision blurry, hazy, or less colorful, causing trouble reading or doing other everyday activities and eventually leading to vision loss. Other factors, such as genetics, prolonged exposure to sunlight, and smoking, can also lead to cataracts. Dr. Ahmad Aref and other experts from UI Health's Cataract Surgical Team are available to discuss cataract diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Preventing tick bites and Lyme disease |
As more people venture outdoors to enjoy the warmer weather, they inadvertently risk themselves for tick bites and Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, commonly transmitted by ticks, that can lead to symptoms like fever, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and rashes. While Lyme disease can be transmitted year-round, the risk is highest in late spring and early summer, when an estimated 300,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S. Dr. Ryan Knodle, a UI Health infectious disease physician, can discuss ways people can limit their exposure, implement a “tick check” after spending time outdoors and learn to identify the symptoms and signs of Lyme disease.
