Theatrikos Theatre Company Receives Governor’s Award: A Milestone for Flagstaff’s Arts Community

There are moments in the life of an organization when recognition feels larger than the award itself, when it reflects not just a single achievement, but an entire community’s belief in the power of the arts. We are deeply honored to share that Theatrikos Theatre Company has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Governor’s Award, one of Arizona’s highest distinctions for arts and culture organizations.

Presented in partnership with Arizona Citizens for the Arts and the Arizona Commission on the Arts, this award recognizes cultural leadership, sustained community engagement, and a deep alignment with the values that strengthen Arizona’s creative landscape. To be chosen from across the state is both humbling and affirming.

For more than 50 years, Theatrikos has been rooted in a simple but powerful idea: that theatre has the ability to bring people together, to reflect the stories of a community, and to create shared experiences that linger long after the curtain falls. This recognition belongs not just to our organization, but to every artist, volunteer, educator, student, and audience member who has been part of that journey.

Flagstaff has always been a place where creativity thrives, and this award shines a spotlight on the extraordinary arts ecosystem that exists here in Northern Arizona. It underscores what we already know to be true: that the arts are not an accessory to our community, but a vital and defining part of it.

As we look ahead, this moment energizes our commitment to expanding access, deepening our educational programming, and continuing to produce work that resonates with and reflects the people we serve. It is both a celebration of where we have been and an invitation to imagine what comes next.

The award will be presented on May 8 at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, and we carry with us the pride of an entire community.

Thank you for being part of our story. We look forward to celebrating with you all season long, whether you are joining us for The Marvelous Wonderettes, participating in one of our educational programs, or experiencing live theatre for the very first time at Theatrikos.

From Gospel Prodigy to Fifth Beatle: Join Us on April 8

We are thrilled to continue our ongoing partnership with the Sedona International Film Festival to bring you another month of world-class cinema. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 8, as we host a special screening of a rhythmic journey through the life of a true musical titan. Often called the "Fifth Beatle" and the "King of the Keys," this month's selection pulls back the curtain on a man whose influence is embedded in the DNA of rock and roll history.

Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, studio outtakes, and rare photos, Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It, is an exhilarating documentary about the legendary Grammy-winning musician whose signature sound shaped the work of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, and countless others.

Billy Preston was perhaps the most unsung musical hero of his time. Born in Houston, Texas, in 1946, he arrived in Los Angeles with his family three years later. At just 5 years old, he was backing gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. By age 10, he was appearing with Ray Charles on film, and by age 15, he was touring with Little Richard in Hamburg, Germany, where he met Richard’s opening act, The Beatles. He would later perform and record with the biggest names in music, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and countless others.

He generated his own unforgettable No. 1 hits, including “Outa-Space,” “Will It Go Round in Circles,” “Nothing from Nothing,” and “You Are So Beautiful” and his first hit single in 1969, on The Beatles’ Apple Records, “That’s The Way God Planned It,” produced by his lifelong friend, George Harrison.

Steaks, Songs, and Scholarships: Support TheatriKids at Black Barts!

Get ready for an evening of show-stopping performances at the legendary Black Bart’s Steakhouse on Sunday, April 12, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. We are proud to present the JoeNightly Music Revue, featuring 20 talented TheatriKids performers singing hits from your favorite Broadway musicals.

For over a decade, Black Bart’s has partnered with us to ensure that every child in our community has access to high-quality arts education. This year, we’ve set an ambitious goal to raise $2,000 to fund our educational camps and provide scholarships for aspiring young artists. A percentage of the proceeds from the evening will go directly toward the TheatriKids Scholarship Fund, ensuring no child is turned away due to financial barriers.

“Come on down and enjoy a wonderful meal and be entertained by our TheatriKids singers and you'll be helping kids in our community discover and hone their talents,” says Joe Maniglia, Theatrikos Education Director.

Don’t miss this chance to enjoy a world-class steakhouse dinner while supporting the next generation of performers!
