IUP Values Me
Student Spotlight: Steven Lomax
Steven will graduate this May with a degree in political science/emergency management and will then pursue a graduate degree in public affairs. He served as president of the Student Government Association for the 2021–22 academic year. Among his many responsibilities, Steven worked closely with the Office of Social Equity and Title IX and other campus partners to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion programming. He credits his DEI work for enabling him to reframe his thinking and decision making to benefit larger populations. Steven is currently completing a public relations internship with the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, where he is involved in the Young Professionals Organization and the Chamber Excellence in Education Program. On campus, he serves on the Co-op Finance Committee and the University Budget Advisory Committee. He is a Student Success leader in the Office of New Student Orientation and a lead peer mentor in the Academic Success Center. Read a brief online feature story about Steven and his academic journey. Steven’s hope for other students is that they get involved and create the experiences they want to see on campus and for themselves. We thank you, Steven!
Staff Spotlight: Kim Anderson
Kim is a faculty member in the Department of Accounting and Information Systems. She is the faculty advisor to the Student Accounting Association and a member of the Eberly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. In these roles, she serves as both a valuable mentor to our students and an important liaison between our alumni and the university. She brings approximately 150 alumni to campus each year to serve as guest speakers and to attend various student networking events, including the annual SAA dinner and the annual SAA career fair. Kim recommends students for awards, scholarships, leadership positions, and job/internship opportunities and recommends alumni for awards, guest speaker opportunities, and service on IUP councils and boards. She ensures that these recommendations achieve gender balance and racial diversity. We thank you, Kim!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we will highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
