The CMU Portugal Program has an Open Call for up to 10 Dual Degree Ph.D. scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year on cutting-edge areas of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).
Dual Degree Doctoral students conduct their studies both in Portugal (3 years at a Portuguese-affiliated University) and the United States (2 years at CMU).

CMU Portugal student is a “Ph.D. Rising Research Star” according to FOCI 2025 |
João Afonso Vilalonga, CMU Portugal Affiliated Ph.D. student in the area of Computer Science at NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT) and researcher at NOVA LINCS, received the “Rising Star Research” 2025 Award by the Free and Open Communications on the Internet (FOCI) community.

| CMU Portugal project PI awarded with a prestigious ERC starting Grant |
João Ribeiro, Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações, was awarded a European Research Council (ERC), worth approximately €1.5 million. The grant will enable advancing the study of synchronization loss errors in communications.
The researcher is currently leading CMU Portugal's exploratory research project, “Fully-Homomorphic Encryption from Post-Quantum Code-Based Assumptions”, launched in 2025.

Feedzai, a CMU Portugal start-up and industry-affiliated partner, was chosen by the European Central Bank (ECB) to safeguard the digital euro with its fraud detection and prevention mechanism, coinciding with the week its valuation hit the $2 billion mark.

| CMU Portugal members are among Forbes Portugal’s Most Powerful Women in Business |
CMU Portugal faculty members Irene Fonseca and Manuela Veloso, have once again been featured in Forbes Portugal’s list of the Most Powerful Women in Business, in recognition of their scientific contributions and achievements.
The list also recognizes Isabel Capeloa Gil, member of CMU Portugal’s Board of Directors.

| Team RedTWIZ Wins 2nd Place in Global Amazon Nova AI Challenge |
After six intense months of designing, testing, and engaging in adversarial models, Team RedTWIZ, representing NOVA FCT and featuring CMU Portugal Ph.D. students, Diogo Silva (team leader) and Diogo Tavares, alongside other FCT NOVA students, secured 2nd place at the 2025 Amazon Nova AI Challenge Trusted AI, a worldwide university AI competition.
