Dear Colleagues and Friends,

As the interim dean of the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing, I’m looking forward to connecting with you all! I joined the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing in 2013 and had the privilege of serving first as program coordinator for the Professional Science Master’s programs and then as the Associate Dean. In my role as interim Dean, I look forward to supporting the newly established Padnos College of Engineering and connecting with our students, community, and partners.

We have a variety of exciting events coming up in July! Please join us for PCEC’s Engineering Alumni and Corporate Partners Preview on Thursday, August 1st from 5:30 – 8:30 PM at the Shape Corp. Innovation Design Center. Senior engineering students' projects will be on display for early viewing. Complimentary beer, wine, and appetizers will be provided. It will be a wonderful opportunity to connect with our graduating seniors, industry peers, and the PCEC Engineering alumni network.

We also invite you to our Engineering Design Conference on Friday, August 2nd. At the conference, we will display our students’ accomplishments during our Co-Op Employer Forum & Awards Presentation and an Industry-Sponsored Senior Project Showcase. Both in-person events will be a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Padnos College of Engineering.

Industry partners, please join us for a collaborative panel discussion on “Unlocking Opportunity: Accessing International Talent” on Tuesday, July 23rd from 8-10 AM at the Grand Rapids Chamber. We will be joined by our colleagues from Global Detroit, West Michigan Tech Talent, Bravo LT, Twisthink, SxanPro and ImLaw for this important and timely event. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Science Technology & Engineering Preview Summer (STEPS) Camp recently completed its 23rd year of operation at GVSU with a record number of applicants and attendees. 88 campers congregated in the Shape Corp. Innovation and Design Center on the Pew Campus between June 10-13 and June 17-20. Over 180 local students applied for the 80 seats at camp, demonstrating a return to pre-covid interest in out-of-school-time informal STEM programming.

Twenty students from universities across the country converged at Grand Valley for a weeklong course that tasked them with hacking into medical devices.The CyberMedical Challenge, held at PCEC's Innovation Design Center, was sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. Karl Heimer, consultant and cybersecurity expert, coordinated the event and said Grand Rapids was the perfect location because of its medical innovation prowess.

The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Laker Racing Team, led by Faculty Advisor Nicholas Baine, hosted a Brazilian Formula SAE Team this spring semester. The Mauá Team of 23 students from the Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia (IMT) were hosted in the Kennedy and Keller buildings, providing them access to equipment enabling them to prepare and make adjustments to their car before the  Michigan International Speedway competition.

Zachary DeBruine, assistant professor of computing, and a team of student researchers are exploring how to develop and deliver artificial intelligence tools to help clinicians at Corewell Health and Helen DeVos Children's Hospital who treat patients with rare diseases. Dr. Caleb Bupp, who leads Corewell Health's Medical Genetics and Genomics Division, said DeBruine's research could be invaluable in a medical field where 1 in 10 Americans has a rare disease yet 95% of patients have no treatment.

Join West Michigan Tech Talent (WMTT) for a series of trail hikes and networking among sunshine, fresh air and interesting people. From June to October, WMTT has scheduled easy lunch time hikes and longer hikes for later in the day. They’ll also share some unique content before and after each hike. Grab your water bottle and granola bar and get ready to network, meet new people and learn something new - all while enjoying West Michigan parks and trail systems.
