A Conversation with Rhonda Holy Bear

Join Lakota artist Rhonda Holy Bear as she discusses her sculptural figures, her creative process, and the artistic journey that shaped her work. Several of Holy Bear’s sculptural figures from the Spencer’s collection will be on view.  Admission to this event and to the Spencer is free for everyone, always. Free parking is available in designated spaces on the first level of the Mississippi Street garage across from the Museum. Check in at our Welcome Desk with your license plate number for parking validation.

KU Design Professional Lecture Series: Mirna Stubbs

Mirna Stubbs grew up in Bosnia and immigrated to Germany during the Bosnian war in the 90s. After returning to Bosnia, her family decided to permanently migrate to the United States. None of those transitions were a breeze. Art was her grounding force, and more importantly, a way forward. 

 Mirna received her bachelor’s degree in Illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design and was recruited by Hallmark Cards, where she still works today. Mirna enjoys working with a collaborative, creative team to create colorful works that help people celebrate their unique relationships and life moments. 

Aside from her career, Mirna is curious to keep exploring her personal illustration style through themes of landscapes, nature, food and lifestyle. She loves painting with gouache, often using color paper as background, and framing her final pieces in decorative, antique frames for a unique marriage of old and new.

KU Architecture Lecture Series: Alejandro Aptilon

Alejandro Aptilon is an assistant teaching professor of architecture at the University of Kansas School of Architecture & Design and principal of an award-winning architectural practice founded in Mexico City in 1998. His firm has completed projects in Mexico, Israel and the United States and has been recognized for its contributions to contemporary Mexican architecture. Aptilon holds degrees from the Israel Institute of Technology and Columbia University. His work has been widely exhibited and published, and he is co-author of the influential book Las Casas del Pedregal 1947-1968. 

The opening lecture will introduce the aims of the Fall 2026 Lecture Series: to shed light on the historical trajectory of architectural practice in Mexico, from its ancient origins to contemporary practices. To this end, the lecture will draw upon Alejandro Aptilon’s current research into the reciprocal architectural influences between Mexico and the United States and will present a representative selection of Modern and contemporary Mexican architectural practitioners, including the series’ guest speakers. This synthesized introduction will provide context for the content, intentions, and reasoning underlying the architectural production of these practices with an emphasis on the work of Alejandro Aptilon Arquitectos.

May Tveit Exhibition | Chalmers Hall, Edgar Heap of Birds Family Gallery

Former KU industrial design professor May Tveit creates large-scale sculptural installations and works on paper that transform everyday commercial and industrial materials into geometric abstractions. Her nationally exhibited work explores the intersections of art, design, architecture, and human experience.  

Coulrophobia by Peyton Smith | Kansas Union Gallery, 4th Floor 

On view through September 25 

Peyton Smith is a fourth-year BFA candidate with a concentration in photography and is currently exploring themes of individuality and performance through portraiture and video. Coulrophobia (fear of clowns) pursues an exploration of identity and the distortion of self-image through portraiture.  

Christian Thompson: Future Ancestor | Spencer Museum of Art

On view until January 10, 2027

In Future Ancestor, Thompson creates a multimedia installation that weaves together history, language, and imagined futures. Blurring the boundaries between storytelling and visual culture, voice and gesture, Thompson’s artistic practice becomes a method of language preservation and cultural survival, allowing Bidjara to resonate across generations.

The Jayhawks Abroad Scholarship is through the Study Abroad and Global Engagement Office and can award $200,000 worth of scholarships to students. The scholarship is merit based, which requires students to have a 3.5 GPA or above, and a Need Based which requires a FASFA to be on file.

The M+H Scholarship will annually award one $5,000 scholarship to a student studying architecture or interior design at an NAAB-accredited school of Architecture or a CIDA-accredited Interior Design program.

Red tape, red flag, seeing red, painting the town red. What does it mean to represent the color red? Often, we associate the color red with intense emotion or a warning. Other times, we think of flowers, birds, or hearts. The Lawrence Arts Center invites artists to submit artwork that relates to the subject/color “red” which is open to the artist’s interpretation.

Decorative Digitalism Open Call 
Off-Site Art Space is holding an open call for Decorative Digitalism III: Student Exhibition, a juried show opening on Thursday, September 24th, in conjunction with Decorative Digitalism III at Edgar Heap of Birds. The call is open to undergraduate and graduate students taking classes in the Department of Visual Art. We are seeking submissions for artwork that utilizes digital tools (such as CAD/CAM, laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC processes) in its fabrication. All mediums are accepted.
