| Dear colleagues,
Welcome to Commencement week. In this season of final exams and special ceremonies, I know your schedules are full. I encourage you to take a moment when you can to celebrate and recognize the many accomplishments our students and our colleagues have achieved throughout the year. We have much to be proud of as a community.
This semester also marked the beginning of W&M’s Year of the Environment (YOTE). Please be sure to take a look at last week’s update from Aayla Kastning, Secretary of Sustainability for Student Assembly, for the latest YOTE news and updates.

Here are the top “5 Things to Know” this week:
|
- Workday, our new enterprise software platform for finance and human resources, will officially launch on July 1st, 2025 and training will begin rolling out in mid-May. Key cut-off dates for finance and HR transactions can be found on the Workday website.
-
Next week, you’re invited to enjoy Ben & Jerry’s ice cream with your colleagues. On May 21st, from 2:00-3:30 p.m., participants in the Spring Writers’ Retreat will join other faculty on campus to take an ice cream break on the patio of Swem Library. All faculty are encouraged to attend.
-
Echoes of Liberty, an outdoor program on the Wren Yard, highlights people from the past by exploring their stories and contributions to American Democracy and William & Mary. This Wednesday, May 14th, you’re invited to hear from Colonial Williamsburg's Thomas Jefferson and James Madison with commentary by Tom McSweeney '02, Professor of Law. This event is free and open to the public.
-
This week, you have the opportunity to attend an interactive training designed to enhance your skills in supporting students in crisis. Campus Connect focuses on empathetic listening, effective communication, and how to compassionately and directly talk with students about crises they may face. The training will be held on Wednesday, May 14th from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. in the conference room on the second floor of the Wellness Building.
- The final shout-out of Spring 2025 goes to every member of our fantastic faculty. This year has presented its share of challenges along with many reasons to celebrate. You continue to rise to every occasion. Thank you.

Finally, if you are looking for something exciting to do at the end of the month, consider taking part in Marine Science Day on May 31st and catching the Michelangelo exhibit at the Muscarelle before it concludes on June 1st. In addition, applications are still open for the National Institute of American History & Democracy’s Pre-College Program in American History. Please feel free to share with any students who might be interested.
I wish all of you a rejuvenating and fun-filled summer. Whether you’re focusing on research, traveling, or staying close to home, I hope you can spend time with loved ones and find moments of joy throughout the season. Please keep me posted on your summer adventures. I will look forward to updating you on the latest W&M faculty news in July!
