Following the recommendations of the 2025 Education Taskforce report, Prof Joel Negin spoke about external engagement at the Education Subcommittee in March. Members explored ideas about placements, student exchange, joint degrees, and joint classes as a way to improve student experience and graduate outcomes. While there was enthusiasm for developing these partnerships, resourcing was identified as a key barrier to progress.

At the same meeting, the MGH program shared their progress on secure assessment transition. This inspired the formation of a School level working group of secure assessment transition to give each other practical help and advocate for issues. Each program is represented on this group, which is due to have their first meeting soon.

Expanding our short course offerings and non-traditional teaching continues to be an area of interest for the School, aligning with Faculty priorities and the recommendations from the Taskforce. To aid with this, there has been a change in the funding model for short courses, with 50% of profit run through SHEED now being directed to the School as discretionary spending. We’ll be randomly selecting a few responses each month for the newsletter, so keep watch to meet your colleagues and to spot your own profile! 

If you want to increase the reach and level of engagement with your research dissemination activities, always pair them with images. This is true for all media formats from a Linkedin post to a news story. Developing an infographic - please do make sure it is actually readable on a phone screen too - or taking some relevant photos and including them with your words not only helps to prioritise your content in social media algorithms, it also helps to draw in readers and increase understanding of your work. Creating a small suite of simple social media tiles, or a carousel, that highlight key results is also an inexpensive and straightforward way of adding visual elements to your research results. There are lots of examples out there, but here’s a good health-related one. Feeling brave? Be sure add a direct to camera video of you talking about your study too. Happy engaging!

This is a free community event where people can learn practical ways to assess falls risk, improve balance, stay active, and reduce falls risk.
