Dear Eagle Nation:
American Education Week is a time to celebrate individuals who have answered the call to help learners of all ages and backgrounds realize their full potential. This week, we celebrate our future educators, our alumni, and our faculty. We also celebrate our role as a destination for outstanding teachers shaping our future in and out of the classroom.
Coppin State University was founded in 1900 as a one-year program for educators to teach in Black schools. Throughout our 122-year history, education has remained central to our mission. Evolving into a four-year university, Coppin helps in the development of scholars who become professionals and go on to touch every corner of our society, and inspire countless others, beyond our campus community.
The Coppin State University School of Education is part of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education, led by Coppin alum and educator, Dr. Leontye L. Lewis (’91), who serves as dean. Under her leadership, they are reimagining education, refining innovative approaches to education, and diversifying the profession.
Leontye L. Lewis shares the story of Coppin State University
(October 2022)
I commend our students, who are answering the call to join the classroom, and our faculty who serve, not only as teachers, but as mentors. Many of our students call Baltimore home after graduation, and become teachers and administrators inside Baltimore City Public Schools, as well as other high-needs areas.

The theme for American Education Week is "Together for Safe, Just and Equitable Schools." Coppin State University recently received $3.7 million from the U.S. Department of Education, to support the Pathways to Professions (P2P) initiative over the next five years. The P2P program aims to increase teacher diversity while also boosting student success in urban and rural schools across Maryland, supporting the vision for equitable schools. The P2P program is housed under Coppin's Center for Inclusive Excellence (CIE), and led by Associate Professor Yi-Ping Huang, Ph.D., director of the CIE.
It has been my pleasure to work closely with Coppin alumna, Aisha Almond ('99), principal of Coppin Academy High School. Coppin Academy is an integral part of our campus and Eagle Nation, giving students guidance and support needed to excel in their high school journey, and showing them a clear pathway to achieving their goals through higher education. I look forward to continuing our work together with Coppin Academy as part of Eagle Nation.

Educators have faced numerous challenges in recent years, and continue to find new ways to connect with, teach, and support our young people as we collectively deal with the aftermath of a global pandemic and other trauma. I challenge each of us to show our appreciation for our educators and recognize the key role they play in making a better world, and future,
for us all.
