Myaamia Center Updates

Over the past several weeks, Myaamia Center staff have been busy wrapping up on-campus programming! Before the semester ended, we were excited to welcome the campus community to our new Technology Extension Office in Laws Hall. While most operations will remain in Bonham House, our ever-growing technology team now has the space they need to oversee the wide range of software development at the Myaamia Center.

As we shift our focus to community programs, the newsletter will take a summer hiatus while staff travel to Miami, OK, and Fort Wayne, IN. We’ll return in August to welcome a new cohort of Myaamia Heritage students to campus.

Recently, we featured Myaamia artist Mihtekia ‘Josiah Dorey’ on Aacimotaatiiyankwi. At only 12 years old, he has quite the artistic resume, including several awards from the Eugene V. Brown Memorial Art Show hosted by the Myaamia Heritage Museum and Archive. In response to these awards, Josiah said, “I didn’t feel like bragging about it; I just think I did a really good job on it.” Check out our spotlight post to see more of his pieces and his process.

In just a few short weeks, we’ll be kicking off our Eemamwiciki Summer Programs in Noošonke Siipionki ‘Miami, OK’ (June 16-20) and Kiihkayonki ‘Fort Wayne, IN’ (July 14-18). For the first time, both programs will happen on sovereign lands of the Miami Nation. In Oklahoma, we utilize our Aacimweekaani ‘Council House’ where we also gather for governmental assemblies and community events. In Indiana, we’re utilizing the brand new multipurpose building at Peehkahkionki, the ‘Beautiful Place,’ that was recently recognized as sovereign land. It will be extra special to be learning about meehtohseeniwinki ašiihkionki ‘Living on the Land’ entirely on lands governed by our nation.

It’s hard to believe another school year has come to an end for the Myaamia Heritage students at Miami University! On Saturday, May 17th, we gathered with our 10 Myaamia Heritage Program graduates and their families in the miloniteeheekaani ‘Myaamia classroom.’ Each graduate received a special t-shirt designed by Julie Olds, a wooden lacrosse stick made by Doug Peconge, and a Myaamia stole with hand-sewn ribbonwork created by Karen Baldwin to wear during graduation ceremonies. While it's sad to see our students leave Oxford, we’re already looking forward to welcoming them back in the fall, along with our newest cohort of Myaamia Heritage students!

Smithsonian Folklife Festival: Youth and the Future of Culture
July 2-7, 2025
Washington, D.C
The Myaamia community, through the Myaamia Center, was invited to participate in this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival. This year, the festival will explore creativity, vitality, resilience, and intergenerational learning through the contributions and experiences of youth. It will feature youth-centered, and often youth-led, projects and organizations that generate new ideas, transform their communities, and confront contemporary challenges. Several of our Myaamia students from the Myaamia Heritage Program, along with Myaamia Center staff, will be at the festival to share Myaamia language, culture, and the program’s impact on our Tribal nation.
