Easier Microsoft Office Sign-On |
Great news from OIT! Active faculty, staff, and students can sign in to their UAH Microsoft account using their ChargerID (@uah.edu) email address and their UAH password (the same one used to sign in to UAH Single Sign-On, Eduroam Wi-Fi, classroom PCs, etc.). OIT plans to soon implement SSO for Microsoft.

Using Respondus this Semester? |
If you plan to use Respondus LockDown Browser, consider using a practice “Try It Quiz” to help students prepare for upcoming tests; it is crucial to make sure the students can use Respondus before a high-stakes exam.
Experience Respondus for yourself in ETLC’s Canvas course on Respondus. Enroll by requesting access through helpdesk@uah.edu.

Which AI chatbot is best? |
For those already dabbling in AI or trying to decide which AI service works for them, you may want to consider Perplexity.
With Perplexity, you can switch between multiple services, such as the most current ChatGPT and Claude engines, among others, even on a question-by-question basis! It works on a browser or in its free apps. It also cites its sources with real footnotes and includes a bibliography with live links to real sources. And it can respond to questions about current news!
For users with a .edu email address, it is only $5 a month. Please note: UAH does not endorse any single AI service nor guarantee the security nor privacy of this service. Terms of use are between you as the user and the AI service or platform.

Changes to Panopto and
Zoom on Feb 1st |
Zoom meeting recordings will no longer be automatically saved in Panopto. Zoom recordings will now be available through Zoom for 30 days. If you want the recording for a course stored in Panopto, please contact ETLC by emailing helpdesk@uah.edu for assistance mapping them to your course.
Auto-generated captioning will be turned on in Panopto. These are not 100% accurate and are NOT ADA compliant. If you have a student with an accommodation, you will still need to go through DSS to make sure it is set up properly.

Mental Health First Aid Certification |
UAH has again partnered with Wellstone Behavioral Health to certify faculty, staff, and graduate assistants in Mental Health First Aid.
The National Council for Mental Wellbeing and the Missouri Department of Mental Health developed this eight-hour nationally recognized training. It teaches the skills needed to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, as well as how to provide someone with initial support until they are connected with appropriate professional help. In the course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies to help someone in crisis or noncrisis situations, and where to turn for help in our community and on-campus.
Join the almost 100 UAH faculty and staff who are certified.
Thursday, February 20, 2025
9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
The on-campus location will be shared with registrants when it is confirmed.
A continental breakfast and lunch is provided.
The workshop is capped at 15 participants, so please register at this link soon.

Course Accessibility Audits |
Any online materials provided to students must now meet WCAG 2.1 standards. To help comply with this requirement, a sample of courses from Fall 2024 across all disciplines will be audited this spring for accessible syllabi and links as well as correct alternative text for any images.
Faculty will be notified about the results of the audit and provided with instructions to comply in the future. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

Rise in Disability Accommodations |
The amount of learners with registered disability accommodations in the United States has quintupled in the last decade. UAH follows the overall trend in recent years, with the percentage of undergraduates with a registered accommodation rising from 4% in 2017 to 8% in 2023. Learners who are actively using their accommodations tend to have similar outcomes to their peers in course success, retention, and graduation rates.
To promote accessibility in your classroom, consider a consultation with an instructional designer in ETLS to discuss universal course design and how it can help all your students.
