Ruff to Debut as Carnegie Hall Soloist |
Dr. Marques J. Ruff, assistant professor of music, director of vocal music education, and associate director of choral activities, will make his Carnegie Hall debut as the baritone soloist in a premiere event conducted by internationally acclaimed British composer and conductor Sir John Rutter. The concert will take place in Stern Auditorium-Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on Monday, May 25. The work, “I'll Make Me A World,” features text by American writer and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson.

Acharya Studies Relationships and Health |
Dr. Sanjeev Acharya, assistant professor of sociology, presented research at the Southwestern Social Science Association annual conference in Nashville. His research focused on the relationship between perceived discrimination and stress. Perceived discrimination increases the levels of stress, but close personal relationships have a moderating effect. Effects of discrimination on stress were stronger for individuals with no close personal relationships. Acharya’s findings underscore the mitigating role of social relationships on health.

Zataraín Inducted into Mexican Academy |
Dr. Zyanya Lucía Zataraín, professor in biological sciences, Campus Querétaro, has been inducted as a member of the Mexican Academy of Science (Academia Mexicana de Ciencias). This is a highly regarded honor and demonstrates her continued high-quality contributions in research and academia. A medical doctor with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, Zataraín’s research has over 2,000 citations, and she has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers in the fields of cancer, tuberculosis and human genetics.

| Weston and Brown Launch Partnership |
The Faculty Research Award Committee has approved a $9,997 grant for Emily Weston, assistant professor of communication disorders, and co-PI Dr. Angelo Brown, assistant professor of criminology, for their interdisciplinary project that includes a community-based clinical partnership with the Children's Home in Paragould. Graduate students will provide speech-language services to at-risk youth. Brown will co-lead a neurodiversity-informed law enforcement training program that aims to improve safety and interactions between officers and autistic individuals.

Crist Presents Experimental Work |
Dr. Timothy Crist, professor of music, performed his original work, “i dreamt it before I even knew,” for modular synthesizer and analog and digital computers at the Missouri Experimental Sonic Arts Conference at the University of Central Missouri. This is a live improvised work for computer and modular synthesizer that utilizes analog computing components and an array of analog neural receptors to shape musical gestures. Crist also presented a related video and discussion.
