The Garfield Center for Public Leadership is wrapping up this semester by beginning preparation for our spring programming, visiting partnership schools, and holding conversations with our Garfield Policy Advisers following the election.
Viewing and Discussing the 2024 Election On November 5, the GCPL hosted an election night watch party for the Garfield Scholars and various friends of the program. Following this, on November 7, the GCPL hosted a discussion about the outcome of the election, which was attended by the Garfield Scholars, GCPL administrators, and members of the Garfield Policy Advisors, which is a group of people with backgrounds in politics, most of whom are based in the DC area. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and debate why the election produced the outcome which it did. All of the participants in this discussion found it to be very valuable and insightful, and there was a general consensus by the end of the meeting that we should hold more such meetings to discuss the election outcome, and related topics. We were particularly pleased by the fact that, notwithstanding the contentious nature of the topic, the GCPL once again was able to provide a forum for civil, respectful conversation about major political issues for people whose perspectives on those issues differ.
Visit to Hudson High School On November 7, we led a discussion for students enrolled in Hudson High School’s “New Dimensions” program, which is best described as a high school version of the GCPL. This conversation built upon the GCPL’s fall seminar on immigration, which was attended by the majority of the students (and instructors) of New Dimensions. We also spent time discussing the election outcomes and tying all of that into themes from Plato’s Republic. We are pleased that the connection between the GCPL and New Dimensions continues to strengthen and foresee a variety of positive outcomes stemming from this partnership.
Prepping for GCPL Spring Seminar Preparation for the spring seminar is underway, which will be titled “Debt and Democracy in America” and will take place in early February. We are excited about the expertise that we will be bringing to this topic, with details to be shared at a later date. This seminar will be hosted on zoom so that we will be able to cater to a wider audience.
Switzerland Trip Planning Our annual GCPL international trip will be taking place in Switzerland this year. We will be exploring various topics, including Swiss economic policy, globalization (particularly the Swiss decision to not join the EU or NATO), as well as studying their educational and scientific policy. As we develop the itinerary for this trip, we are excited for the multi-faceted programming and the educational experience it will bring to our Garfield scholars.
