Welcome to April! Academic legend has it that April may be the most challenging month of the academic calendar. I wondered why it should be any more challenging than December, until I realized we are also fast-approaching May and commencement. But we will get there and we will celebrate!
Questions surrounding generative AI (think ChatGPT, Bard, etc.), are bubbling up across campus. The Committee on Computing & Academic Technology (CCAT) is on it! CCAT is the University-wide standing committee that addresses all things academic technology related by connecting faculty representatives, IT, and eLearning/CFE in one discussion. You are represented on this committee by elected faculty members and deans’ offices. It reports through Faculty Council.

|
A CCAT sub-committee has been formed and is working to address various aspects related to generative AI. Committee members and invited guests are looking into the following.

eLearning: Spotlight & Resources |
| |
|
eLearning Staff Spotlight: Diana Boone, Exam Developer |
I initially started with Creighton in 1997 with the Health Sciences Library. When I was laid off in 2017, I decided to view it as a gift of a new opportunity and direction in my life but realized that I was looking for what I had--working with a great group of people and helping them in small ways. I was delighted to find myself re-hired in 2018 with the CFE. I mostly support the College of Nursing and have always felt that makes me the luckiest of the Exam Developers as Nursing is the only ExamSoft group we support that includes undergraduates and I just adore their excitement. When I’m not working, I enjoy listening to books, binge-watching television shows, eating bacon, and pretending that I’m good at yoga. I recently became a Great-Great Aunt so will have a new generation to try to convince that I’m their favorite.

Methods for Encouraging Student Metacognition: |
McGuire (2015) demonstrates that Metacognition, the process of ‘thinking about your own thinking,’ has been shown to be a valuable support to student learning. When students reflect on their own learning strategies and their results, it empowers them to be more independent and proactive learners. Metacognition also encourages deeper learning of content and the ability to widely apply that knowledge (McGuire 2015). Methods to encourage student metacognition include:
|
- Incorporating pre-learning goal writing and post-learning reflections.
-
Administering a knowledge survey at the beginning of the course and again at the end to reflect progress.
- Facilitating student-to-student discussions to share study methods/strategies that have proven effective for them.
- Reflecting on post-exam performance and methods for exam preparation that proved effective, or not.
-
Presenting students with problem-solving scenarios, then analyze and compare the processes they would use to resolve those situations.
|
For additional strategies to encourage metacognition, consult Online Teaching at Its Best: Merging Instructional Design with Teaching and Learning Research by Nilson and Goodson (2018) and Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You Can Incorporate Into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation by McGuire (2015).
