Architecture faculty candidate presentations  

February 16 and 18 | Zoom 

Candidates for the tenure-track faculty position to lead Kansas City Urban Housing and Urban Design initiatives will make public presentations and participate in student question and answer sessions.

The agenda for each Zoom interview will be: 

1:00 PM: Candidates make public presentations showing their work, teaching philosophy and qualifications for the position 

3:00 PM: Students meet with candidates for Q & A session

KU Illustration Club Meeting

The purpose of the KU Illustration Club is to create a welcoming environment that encourages curiosity, determination, and creative problem-solving. This club will provide students with resources that expand their education in the School of Design and create relationships with local Lawrence businesses. These resources will include visits to museums to study contemporary and historical artwork, professional studio visits, attending national illustration and animation conferences, portfolio review and development, and fostering uplifting interpersonal relationships with peers that carry on into professional careers.

Join the KU Center for East Asian Studies and our partners for an evening of festivities and friendship to ring in the Year of the Horse. Enjoy East Asian musical performances, dance, crafts, and more. There will be activities for children and adults alike. Bring the whole family!

KU Design Professional Lecture Series: Jen White-Johnson

Jen White-Johnson (she/they) is a disabled, neurodivergent Afro-Latina art activist and design educator whose work utilizes photography, zines, and collage art to explore the intersection of content and caregiving, emphasizing the redesign of ableist visual culture. Her work has been featured in Adobe, Afropunk, and PBS. White-Johnson ’s work has been collected by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

RISO Zine Workshop with Jen White-Johnson  

1:00–3:00 PM | KU Colorbar, 203c Chalmers 

Join the Design Department for a risograph workshop led by Design Lecture series guest Jen White-Johnson! RISO is an affordable, efficient, and vibrant tool for printing zines, books, posters, and other works on paper. Sometimes referred to as a digital screen printer, the RISO uses analog processes to translate digital designs to paper one color at a time. Check out KU's RISO lab on Instagram!

Student Competitions

The 2026 AIA National Photography Competition 

The competition is open to all architects and architectural students across the country.  Top-awarded photographs receive a cash prize and included is the Student Award, specifically awarded to an entry from architectural student photographer.  Architectural Record is the Media Sponsor of the competition, and they announce all the recognized images nationally and display the top-awarded photographs at their booth at the AIA National Conference, which will take place in San Diego this coming year.

Scholarships

Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition 

The 2026 Student Scholarship Competition is accepting submissions. This competition is now open to undergraduate students, educators, and department chairs who are interested in entering their student's work. All accepted artwork will be featured in the exhibition at the Society and will be reproduced in a full-color catalog that is distributed within the industry.

HOK KC Design Scholarship 

HOK KC is offering a scholarship to all architecture, interior design, and interior architecture students entering their third year or higher in Fall 2026. The scholarship awards (1) $5,000 scholarship to a candidate to be used in support of academic and educational pursuits. The selection criteria are based on a combination of demonstrated passion for architecture and design, academic achievement, work samples, and participation in extracurricular activities. The top 3 applicants will be required to interview with the HOK Scholarship Committee.

The KC Ad Club Foundation Scholarship 

This opportunity is open to sophomores or juniors pursuing advertising, marketing, graphic design, or a related field. The recipient will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship, 1:1 mentorship, KC Ad Club membership, & tickets to events.

BWBR is offering a $2,500 portfolio scholarship to 4th and 5th year students in a NAAB-accredited architectural program. Students should submit a completed application form along with their portfolio.

Springfield Area Foundation for Architecture Scholarship 

Administered by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, applications are open for the 2026–2027 academic year. This scholarship awards a $900.00 scholarship for an undergraduate student entering third, fourth, or fifth year in Architecture. Must have GPA of 3.0 or above; submit transcript. Must submit a copy of driver's license, demonstrate financial need; submit FAFSA-SAI. Portfolio & Essay required.

Must be from one of the following Missouri counties: Barry, Barton, Camden, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Douglas, Greene, Hickory, Jasper, Laclede, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Ozark, Polk, Pulaski, St. Clair, Stone, Taney, Vernon, Webster or Wright

Chicago Committee of High Rise Buildings (CCHRB) Scholarship 

The CCHRB funds an annual scholarship program to support eligible students at any college or university program, with an alumnus who serves as a member of the committee. Areas of study which qualify include, but are not necessarily limited to architecture, engineering, construction management, and real estate. Graduate students are eligible; highly qualified senior and junior-level undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply. You must have at least one, and preferably two, semesters remaining.

Kansas City Architectural Foundation Scholarship 

Kansas City Architectural Foundation awards more than $50,000 a year in scholarships to metro-area students pursuing a degree in architecture. Applications are due each spring and awarded at an annual ceremony in August. Scholarship application is posted on this page each year. These scholarships are funded through contributions to KCAF from generous companies, individuals, and organizations.

The AIA St. Louis Scholarship Fund 

The AIA St. Louis Scholarship Fund offers opportunities for students that are born or raised in the AIA St. Louis region and are studying architecture in their third, fourth, fifth year or performing graduate work at an NAAB accredited school of architecture (the University may be located anywhere in the US).  Students will be asked to complete and application and if they meet the criteria, we will contact them to schedule a personal interview between the applicant and the Scholarship Fund Committee.

Baltimore, MD | July 2026 

ICON The Illustration Conference brings together illustrators, designers, art buyers, reps, educators, and other creative types to celebrate the past, present, and future of visual storytelling. 

Professor Sam Yates Meier is the Vice President of ICON13, and Professors Kent Smith and Matthew Cook will be Education Symposium Speakers this year!  

This volunteer opportunity is open to undergraduate or graduate students, including those graduating in May 2026. To help keep the conference buzzing and operating smoothly, ICON relies on a team of student volunteers. Each of the ICON13 board of directors needs a team to help them execute all aspects of the conference, from setup, registration, check-in, office admin, bookstore, stagecraft, speaker concierge/wranglers, events, and more.  

🎟️ Volunteers will receive a free conference ticket that includes all events and parties and will get to observe as much of the programming as possible.  

Volunteers are responsible for their own travel and lodging in Baltimore & must be available July 14/15 through July 18, 2026

Students learn in hands-on workshops taught by KU School of Architecture & Design faculty. The residential camp option is held at the Lawrence campus, and the day camp option is held at the Edwards campus. The School of Architecture & Design is hiring a Design Camp Assistant to aid with camp logistics and activities, including preparing materials and supplies for upcoming camp activities, coordinating mealtime logistics, and assisting with additional duties as assigned.
