Dear colleagues,
The 2024 CAA Academic Alliance Provosts Council and Chief Student Affairs Officers Council joint meetings will be held at William & Mary early next week. We have a robust agenda focused on pressing issues across higher education. I’m particularly excited about our planned discussions regarding educational uses for generative AI. Thank you to those preparing to welcome these leaders to campus. I will share additional insights and updates following our time together.

Here are the top 5 things to know this week:
|
|
|
-
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit nominations for the Values in Action awards by this Wednesday, October 16. All non-student employees of W&M or contractors providing auxiliary services to the university are eligible for nomination.
-
Please remind your students that they are invited to stop by the 2024 Undergraduate Research Opportunities Fair tomorrow, October 15 from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Sadler Center’s Chesapeake Room to learn more about engaging in research. Faculty and student representatives from Arts & Humanities, Social Science, and STEM will be present (along with free catered refreshments).
-
Later this week, you’re also invited to the Applied Research and Innovation Initiative Research Showcase on Friday, October 18 at 11 a.m. Come to the Hive at Swem Library and learn from W&M students and faculty who were awarded innovation grants for applied research on pressing global issues. Presentations will begin promptly at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
-
The midterm grading period is open and runs through October 27th, the day before the withdrawal deadline for undergraduates. Midterm grades advance student success by giving undergraduates time to withdraw from a course, seek additional help from faculty, schedule academic advising, or make use of free tutoring through TutorZone. For students doing well, they reduce academic anxiety. Please plan to share grades on Blackboard in advance of the deadline, ideally offering undergraduate students enough time to make informed plans.

5. This week’s shoutout goes to everyone involved in making W&M’s 2024 Homecoming & Reunion Weekend a success. Be sure to take a look at the schedule and take part in the fun.
From marking the Year of the Arts with special guests and performances, to recognizing the newly named Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences at VIMS, to honoring scholarship recipients and milestone reunion anniversaries, we have much to celebrate as a community this weekend.
