Call for Proposals: Sculptural Artwork for the Provost’s Office |

The Office of the Provost invites proposals from William & Mary faculty and students for the creation of two original sculptural works to be displayed on pedestals in the Provost’s Office. This commission offers a unique opportunity to integrate artistic practice into the daily life of academic leadership, underscoring William & Mary’s commitment to creativity, scholarship, and community.
This initiative is offered in partnership with the Art & Science Exchange (ASE), which fosters collaboration across disciplines and foregrounds the role of the arts in shaping inquiry, discovery, and leadership.

Project Goals
The commissioned pieces should:

Enhance the Provost’s Office with original artwork that embodies the creativity and intellectual vitality of William & Mary faculty and students.
- Reflect themes of knowledge, leadership, and the university’s values, while allowing for the artist’s own interpretation and voice.
- Demonstrate the potential of art to serve as a point of dialogue within and beyond the academy.

- Number of Works: Two sculptures, one for each pedestal.
- Placement: Works will be permanently displayed in the Provost’s Office.

Scale: Sculptures should be appropriately sized to fit securely on the pedestals. Pedestal Dimensions are as follows:
- Height: 42 in
- Distance from top of pedestal to hanging light: 34 in
- Top platform dimensions: 16 in (front side) × 16 in (right side) × 10 in (left side) × 10 in (slanted side)
- Medium: Open to all durable media suitable for indoor display.
- Timeline: Completed works should be installed by July 2026

- Open to faculty and student teams from all disciplines at William & Mary.
- Collaborative proposals (from interdisciplinary faculty and student teams) are highly encouraged, in keeping with the mission of the Art & Science Exchange.

Proposal Guidelines
Please submit the following materials:
|

Artistic Statement (500 words max): Describe the artistic vision of the team and its connection to the goals of the project.
- Proposal Description: Outline the concept for one or both sculptures, including materials, dimensions, and thematic considerations.
- Sketches/Renderings: Visual representations of the proposed design.
- Portfolio/Examples of Prior Work: Up to 3 images of relevant past projects (may include student coursework or professional work).
- Budget: Estimated budget for materials and fabrication.
- Timeline: Proposed schedule for creation and installation.

Selection Process
A review committee, appointed by the Office of the Provost, will evaluate proposals based on:

- Artistic merit and originality

Feasibility of execution within budget and timeline
- Durability and suitability for the display environment

- Deadline: November 10, 2025
- Submit proposals to: Ase@wm.edu. Please send one PDF file with all materials and mark the subject line with Sculptural Artwork_[last name of the faculty lead].

Notification of selection: November 19th during the Power of the &: Art & Science Exchange Launch & Reception, Sadler Center, 5pm.
