Dear Eagle Nation:
Coppin State University is the only institution in Maryland producing scholars at both the high school and collegiate levels. As Baltimore's hometown university, we were honored to host several graduation ceremonies for Baltimore City Public Schools.
The celebrations began on Wednesday, June 5, with the graduation of the Coppin Academy High School Class of 2024. Coppin Academy, a public charter high school, for 20 years has been operated by and located on the campus of Coppin State University in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools.

Dr. Chanta Haywood

Coppin Names Interim Provost

Coppin is experiencing a great deal of innovation and growth under Dr. Jenkins’ leadership at this juncture in its rich history, and I am excited to be a part of his team," said Dr. Haywood. "I am even more eager to collaborate with the entire campus community to strengthen our academic enterprise and to make sure our students, faculty and staff have the resources they need to succeed.
Dr. Chanta Haywood is an experienced university administrator, researcher, professor and scholar with a Ph.D. focused in American Literature from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD).

She has nearly 25 years of executive experience in three university systems (Florida, North Carolina and Georgia), having served as a graduate dean, associate provost for academic affairs, associate vice president for research, and vice president for advancement.

Her work in those capacities led to an appointment by U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, to the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Board, where she served as Chair for four years. She has done program and grant reviews, including President Obama's First in the World grant program.

Dr. Haywood is known for her practical, strategic, collaborative leadership style.  Because she has gone through the academic ranks as a faculty member, she privileges shared governance and supporting faculty professional development.  Having had what she describes as a “quintessential educational experience” as an undergraduate student at Florida A&M University and as a master’s and doctoral student at UCSD, she is committed to ensuring that students have exceptional academic experiences that prepare them for the world.

She is a noted scholar, having recently lectured at Yale on her groundbreaking book, Prophesying Daughters: Black Women Preachers and the Word, 1823-1913, which has the distinction of having been released in two editions by the University of Missouri Press. She has also recently received a Certificate in Fostering Diversity and Inclusion from Yale.

She has overseen millions of dollars in federal and private grants, including those from NASA, NIH, DOE, IMLS, Title III, the Gates Foundation and more. As Vice President for Advancement, she oversaw fundraising, alumni and constituent relations, stewardship and advancement services, the annual fund, corporate and foundation relations, and major gifts and gift planning. She has also supervised the office of communications and marketing at two universities.

Dr. Haywood is also a prolific writer, with experience in almost every genre of writing in the academy:  books, articles, degree proposals, accreditation reports, grants, strategic plans, administrative reports, white papers, news articles, blogs, and press releases.
“It is a pleasure to have Dr. Haywood join our community of scholars and my executive leadership team,” said President Jenkins. “Her experience, disposition, and professional acumen, will contribute significantly to our ability to maintain our progress as well as help us achieve our strategic priorities.”

New and Familiar Leadership for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs

President Jenkins has developed a co-leadership team to oversee enrollment management and student affairs for the upcoming academic year. Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students Dorothy Parrish-Harris, JD., will focus on student affairs, while Associate Vice President for Student Development and Achievement James Stewart, PhD., will concentrate on enrollment and retention.

Dr. Stewart and his team, along with faculty and staff across campus, have played a significant role in helping us achieve a historic retention rate of 74%. Dean parrish Harris has led the charge on addressing important student issues such as homelessness and food insecurities. Join me in congratulating Dean Parrish-Harris and Dr. Stewart on their new roles. We are confident they will continue to drive Coppin State University upward.

Eagles on the Move

Coppin State alumni Michael Davenport and Jordan Redmond won bronze at the prestigious Telly Awards. Davenport produced the short film "The Busheler of Baltimore," while Redmond assisted on set by setting up equipment such as stands, rigging cameras, tripods, and helping with light setup.

Coppin State Scholars and Champions

Coppin State University leads the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for the third consecutive year with the highest student-athlete graduation rate. The sustained success reflects the dedication of Coppin State's faculty, athletic department, and support staff in providing an environment where athletes can thrive both on the field and in the classroom.
