Nineteen special education majors attended the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) conference at the Baltimore Convention Center on March 13. Throughout the day, students participated in multiple sessions led by esteemed experts in special education. A highlight for many was meeting and speaking with Dr. Antoine L. Hickman, the Maryland State Department of Education's Assistant State Superintendent for the Division of Early Intervention and Special Education Services.
Reflecting on the event, special education major and POSE Scholar Kimarra Smith shared, "I truly enjoyed my experience at the CEC conference. Special education is my passion, and being surrounded by professionals who share that passion was incredibly motivating. I was already excited to start my career, but attending the conference really put the icing on the cake!"
Mary Grandea, a special education major and SEQUEL Scholar, added, "The CEC conference was an inspiring experience. To see this level of dedication toward our special populations illustrates the heart of our society. I felt honored to participate and look forward to remaining involved with CEC."
As the demand for special education professionals continues to grow, Coppin State remains at the forefront of preparing the next generation of educators.

Rene' Brown joined Coppin State College as the IT Computer Labs Manager in January 2001. She immediately implemented structured management systems, moving from an "honest system" of reporting to a formal work schedule. As technology advanced, she hired, supervised, educated, trained, motivated, counseled, and mentored an average of 35 students per semester before COVID-19.
A significant milestone in her career came in 2007 when she implemented and managed Coppin's first IT Student Helpdesk. Her exceptional management led to the 2019 merger of the staff, faculty, and student helpdesks into one main IT Helpdesk under her leadership.
Known affectionately as "Mamma Brown," has dedicated herself to "Nurturing Potential & Transforming Lives" through hiring, training, coaching, motivating, inspiring, and mentoring hundreds of student workers. Her democratic management style fosters a professional environment that promotes teamwork, respect, accountability, and leadership, preparing students for career advancement after graduation.
Her advice to women considering IT careers: "Don't be afraid to explore various opportunities to discover the best fit for you! Stay Positive & Empowered, Be Assertive, yet respectful and remain Humble and Teachable. Dismantle negative energy. Don't allow the promotion of others to negatively impact your dedication and commitment or cloud your judgment or devalue your skills and abilities. Pray to God for guidance and favor!"
Personal motto: "'We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.' 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 'Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.' Romans 8:37"
Final thought: "I Love My Job, I Love My Co-Workers & I Truly Adore My Student Workers!!"
