Dear Eagle Nation,
As we approach the final week of October, this week's newsletter is pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
While breast cancer primarily affects women, men can also be diagnosed with the disease.
Breast cancer is linked to various risk factors, but making health and wellness a priority can help reduce the likelihood of developing the disease. By raising awareness through  education support, we can empower our communities, and advocate for the research and treatments that will bring us closer to a cure.

At Coppin State University, we honor the strength of survivors, remember those we have lost, and recognize the impact of this disease on our families and friends. As we conclude this month of awareness, we encourage everyone to take action—whether it is scheduling a mammogram, participating in awareness events, or simply sharing information to help others.

Coppin State University is dedicated to building lasting partnerships that strengthen our community. In 2021, Coppin State and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShieldcame together to leverage their strength in transforming lives. Together we hosted the first two chorts of the West Baltimore Workforce Development Program on our campus.
Last week, Coppin State joined CareFirst in celebrating the opening of the West Baltimore Training, Wellness, and Community Center at The Village at Mondawmin. Through this new center, CareFirst will continue to foster wellness, education, training programs, and a supportive environment where West Baltimore residents can pursue their personal and professional goals. We look forward to witnessing the center’s positive impact and advancing our shared commitment to creating pathways toward upward economic mobility and a healthier, brighter future.
The Presidential and Fanny Jackson Coppin Scholars Luncheon was a moment to celebrate the dedication and achievements of our scholars. During the event, I was honored to present each scholar with their jackets and cardians, symbolizing their commitment to academic excellence and leadership.
“It makes me feel valued and motivates me to give my best to maintain my standing,” said Khalida Ames, a 2024 Presidential scholar. “It pushes me to aim for at least a 3.5 GPA, and I’m striving for that and beyond because I see the benefits.”

This tradition not only honors the legacy of Fanny Jackson Coppin, but also inspires our scholars to continue striving for greatness in their educational journeys and future endeavors. We are excited to support these Eagles Amplified as they carry forward a legacy of resilience, scholarship, and community.

Dr. Jamal Uddin, founder of the Center for Nanotechnology, has recently contributed to a prestigious research study on Metasurface Optics for High-Contrast Imaging at the W. M. Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California. The study took place from September 23-27, 2024, and involved collaboration with esteemed researchers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) under a NASA contract.
The research convened a diverse group of experts, including end-users, designers, fabricators, and metrology specialists, to investigate the application of metasurface optics in astronomy and high-resolution imaging. Dr. Uddin, along with students from Coppin State University, is set to visit NASA's James Webb Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore as part of an ongoing partnership with KISS, joining other workshop participants in this exciting venture.
