Our Spartan hearts go out to all impacted by Hurricane Helene and the related storms and flooding. A listing of federal, state, and local assistance and recovery efforts and assistance request information can be found at disasterassistance.gov. Students affected are encouraged to seek supportive counseling through CAPS, and by applying to the Support Our Spartans (SOS) Fund if financial support is needed. The SOS Emergency Needs Fund was created to provide students with immediate financial support to cover educational costs and unanticipated expenses during crises such as accidents, illness, death of a family member, fire damage or need for temporary housing. We encourage you to learn more and donate to this fund, if so moved.
As we near Family Weekend, we’d like to remind you that the registration deadline is nearing! Be sure to register by Oct. 18 for this fantastic event with opportunities only offered during Family Weekend. We’ll be sending a final email reminder right before the deadline, then regular communications to those who will be joining us with event details and updates. And eventually, the weather will turn more autumnal, and you may want to curl up with a cozy blanket and warm beverage. Grab a Spartan Family Care Kit and feel some MSU love! Limited quantities are still available.
Our November newsletter will be sent after Family Weekend and after election day. We hope to see you in person for Family Weekend, and thank you, in advance, to those who can and do participate in national, state and local elections. As the MSUvote team says, Go Green! Go White! Go Vote!
Take care,
Laurin

MSUvote
MSUvote is a nonpartisan campus committee focused on boosting student voter registration, providing education on candidates and issues, and driving participation on Election Day. In collaboration with national organizations, MSUvote organizes events like voter registration drives, debate watch parties, and forums to engage students in the political process. For this election, MSUvote, in partnership with the East Lansing Clerk’s office, will host a 14-day early voting location at WKAR Studio B, in the Communication Arts and Sciences building.
For more details on voter registration, early voting or absentee ballots, visit msuvote.msu.edu.

Spring Semester Enrollment
Spring semester course enrollment begins by appointment Oct. 28. Students will receive an email with their enrollment appointment time, which is also viewable in SIS. Advising appointments are not required, but it is recommended students meet with their academic adviser once each semester to ensure they are taking the appropriate courses to progress to graduation. Advising appointments are scheduled through SIS, and most colleges have drop-in advising hours available. Please remind your student that advising appointments are in high demand the closer the date is to enrollment, so schedule those appointments earlier in the semester to prepare for the next semester’s enrollment. Students are also encouraged to use the shopping cart feature in SIS to make the enrollment process faster for them.

December Graduation
Is your Spartan planning to graduate in December? If so, congratulations! To ensure their name is included in the commencement program, be sure their directory information is not restricted and they apply to graduate by Oct. 11 (both are steps in SIS). They will also need to register to participate in a Fall 2024 Commencement Ceremony. All of this information, as well as additional details, can be found on the Commencement website.

Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence (SARV) Prevention
Each undergraduate student at MSU is responsible for completing a training on the prevention of Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM). For first-year and transfer students, an in-person workshop called Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence (SARV) Prevention is offered. For second-year students, an in-person workshop called Bystander Network is offered. Third-year and above undergraduate students participate in an online module training each year.
Students who have not completed their RVSM prevention training this fall may have holds placed on their accounts in the spring semester. A hold means that the student may not be able to access some system functions such as viewing their grades or transcript. For the hold to be removed, first-year, transfer and second-year students need to register for and attend one workshop this academic year. Third-year and above students can access and participate in their online module at any time.
Information regarding this mandatory training can be found here. Frequently asked questions are located at the bottom of the web page. Students can contact empower.msu.edu if they have additional questions about their specific situation. Prevention of gender-based violence continues to be a priority on our campus, and we appreciate your partnership with this effort.

2025-26 On-Campus Housing Sign-Up
On-Campus Housing Sign-Up is now organized into three main phases:
-
Fall: On-campus apartment sign-up for current second-year students and above.
- Spring: Residence hall sign-up for first-year students.
- Summer: Incoming student residence hall housing preferences and assignments.
Important Dates:
- Sign-up for current second-year+ students interested in on-campus apartments or residence hall rooms begins in October 2024.
- Current residents should complete the 2025-26 Housing Interest Form in their My Housing account, beginning Oct. 1.
Due to high demand for on-campus housing, we may not be able to accommodate everyone who is interested. The interest form will help us assess interest levels, and selection times will be randomly generated based on class standing.
Current First-Year Housing Guidance:
- MSU requires first-year students to live on campus for two years.
-
First-year students should not sign any off-campus leases this fall. They will select on-campus housing for 2025-26 in the spring, with opportunities to choose specific halls, rooms, and group housing options.
More details about housing options, exceptions and group housing will be shared at the beginning of the spring semester.

MSU Tour Guide Applications Open

National Census Survey
This year, the 2024 National Census Survey is being conducted to plan for the 2030 Census. MSU works with the Census Bureau by emailing a survey to a small sample of students who haven’t restricted their names in SIS. We do not share emails with Census staff. If your student is selected, please ensure they complete the survey.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we want to ensure all Spartans are safe and secure online — which means more than just creating a strong password. Protecting yourself and the MSU community is all about increasing your knowledge so you can decrease cybersecurity risk. The more aware you are, the more secure you will be. Visit secureit.msu.edu for more information.
Speaking of security, a Spartan Card is more than just a student ID, it’s a student’s key to campus. It provides access to buildings, MSU Library Services, Spartan Cash, admittance to athletic events, and dining plans. Keeping it secure protects identities and out of the hands of scammers. Read more here.

University Health and Wellbeing Update
As flu season approaches, encourage your Spartan to prioritize their health by getting their annual flu shot. Getting the flu vaccine can lessen the severity of symptoms and help students stay on track with their classes. Don’t forget, for year-round protection, the HPV vaccine is also offered. Please note that flu shots do not count toward the three subsidized visits that are available to students every academic year. Flu shots are available for students at:
- Olin Health Center, Monday through Friday
- Brody Outpost Clinic, Tuesdays and Thursdays
Call 517-353-4660 to schedule today!
Additionally, as we approach Election Day, UHW reminds students that mindfulness can be an essential tool when facing external stressors, especially during uncertain times. Check out their election care kit.

Office of Student Support & Accountability
Now is around the time we start to see some behavioral concerns with some students — academically, emotionally and socially. You can help us help students by learning more about the Office of Student Support & Accountability (OSSA). The OSSA team works with students in a variety of ways to assist with academic integrity, student conduct, conflict resolution, medical amnesty, and overall care and intervention.
Let’s focus on two this month: medical amnesty and care and intervention. Medical Amnesty is exemption from discipline for violations of university drug- or alcohol-use/possession policies for MSU students seeking immediate assistance for themselves or on behalf of someone else. Layman’s terms: if someone has had too much to drink or has overdosed, a student should call 911, claim medical amnesty, and stay with the person until help arrives. This can literally save a life.
The OSSA Care and Intervention Team (CAIT) is a team of case workers on campus that provides support to all MSU community members by advocating and empowering, providing support, guidance, and resources, and identifying, assessing, and intervening with individuals who may be demonstrating behavioral concerns. Their work provides a safe and supportive physical and emotional environment for members of the university community. We may have feelings about a situation and wonder if we should tell someone our concerns. An interaction that just doesn’t feel right, or a situation we believe is of concern. If the situation is an emergency, always call 911. If it’s not emergent, anyone can contact CAIT by making a referral. CAIT will reach out to the community member to connect them to support and resources.
