As assistant vice chancellor, Dr. Khalessi will report to the vice chancellor for Health Sciences.
An active, internationally regarded cranial and endovascular neurosurgeon, Dr. Khalessi chairs the Department of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine, one of the nation's top neurosurgery programs as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. He holds the Don and Karen Cohn Chancellor's Endowed Chair of Neurological Surgery and has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications and served as principal or co-investigator on more than 25 clinical trials.
A national leader in medical innovation and regulatory science, Dr. Khalessi is an inductee of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, past president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, chairs the Neurosurgery Advisory Council for the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Neurological Surgery, serves on National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke study sections, advises the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on neurovascular technology through the Medical Device Innovation Consortium, and was recently appointed to the federal Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology's Health Information Technology Advisory Committee.
Dr. Khalessi earned his medical degree at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Southern California. He holds degrees from Stanford University and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
