JANUARY 2026

BRIDGE TRAFFIC AND TRANSIT RIDERSHIP UPDATE

Travel in the Golden Gate Corridor by Bridge, Bus, and Ferry remains well below pre-pandemic levels. Thankfully, overall travel in the Golden Gate Corridor continues to trend upward.
From July through December 2025, southbound Bridge traffic was about 2 percent above the same 6-month period in 2024, Bus ridership was 10 percent above the same 6-month period in 2024, and Ferry ridership was 5 percent above the same 6-month period in 2024.
Today, during the morning southbound commute, Bridge traffic is still down about 25 percent compared to pre-pandemic traffic. Less Bridge traffic results in less toll funding available to operate the District’s bus and ferry service. Accordingly, staff are focused on reducing costs while providing first-class service for travelers in the Golden Gate Corridor.
December 2025 traffic and transit ridership statistics are below:

BAY AREA TRANSIT AGENCIES WELCOME SUPER BOWL LX

Bay Area transit agencies are encouraging residents and visitors alike to take transit to Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Sunday, February 8, and to related events happening around the region. Events include Super Bowl Opening Night at the San Jose Convention Center, a Concert Series at Bill Graham Auditorium, a five-day Super Bowl Experience at Moscone Center, and a Fan Zone at Yerba Buena Gardens - all held in the week leading up to the big game. Bay Area Transit agencies are promoting transit options with a Super Bowl LX website, social media campaigns, and direct rider communications.
To celebrate transit’s role in getting fans to Super Bowl LX-related events, Bay Area transit agencies and MTC are also encouraging transit riders to wear their favorite jersey on transit on Tuesday, February 3, dubbed "Jersey Day". Participating agencies will have staff handing out prizes to those spotted wearing a jersey during their ride, while supplies last.

DIRECTOR BERT HILL APPOINTED BOARD PRESIDENT

At their January 23, 2026, meeting, the District Board of Directors appointed Director Bert Hill as new Board President. President Hill succeeds outgoing President Gerald "Jerry" D. Cochran, who completed his term on January 23, 2026.
President Hill joined the Board of Directors in 2015 and most recently served as First Vice President. He is one of nine Board members representing the City and County of San Francisco, and is one of the non-elected, public members appointed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. President Hill has an accomplished career in active transportation advocacy, primarily bicycles, including experience as a League of American Bicyclists’ Certified Bicycle Safety Educator, an Expert Witness, and producer of bicycle safety videos. In 2009 he was the recipient of the League’s National Education Award for his Urban Street Skills program in San Francisco. Since 2005, he has served as Chair of the San Francisco Bicycle Advisory Committee and currently serves as Chair of the Caltrans District 4 Bicycle Advisory Committee.
President Hill succeeds outgoing President Cochran, who served as President from January 2024 through January 23, 2026. Director Cochran joined the Board in 2004 as the lone representative from Del Norte County and has served as a Director for over 20 years. Under his leadership, the District completed the Suicide Deterrent System, was awarded a $400 million federal grant for the seismic retrofit of the Golden Gate Bridge, navigated the slow recovery of transit ridership following the pandemic, awarded a contract to purchase two new high speed, low-emission ferries, and approved the MASCOTS transit service plan, among many other accomplishments.
We thank President Cochran for his years of service and leadership to the District and congratulate incoming President Hill on his appointment.
