The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a health update today to provide clinicians and local health departments updates on the avian influenza A(H5N1) current situation. Information regarding specimen collection, testing, treatment, chemoprophylaxis and healthcare infection and prevention control is also provided.
Healthcare providers should consider avian influenza A in persons with acute respiratory symptoms and/or conjunctivitis and recent exposure in the last 10 days to animals suspected or confirmed to have avian influenza A or other recent exposure to raw milk or raw milk dairy products. If avian influenza A infection is suspected, providers should notify their local health department immediately. In Los Angeles County, call LAC DPH at:
- (213) 240-7941 (7:30AM-5:00PM, Mon-Fri)
- (213) 974-1234 (After Hours, Emergency Operator)
If the suspect case resides in Long Beach, Pasadena, or other counties, report the case immediately to the appropriate health department. See CDPH Local Health Districts list.
