Teacher of the Month - October 2021 - Lena Walker

In cooperation with the Mayor's office and City Council, the Rotary Club of Okla. City recognizes an outstanding teacher in our community.
Lena  Walker has been a Math teacher at KIPP OKC College Prep, teaching algebra and pre-algebra to 7th and 8th graders for the past 16 years and has been a teacher for 31 years.  She  has remained in the classroom even though she has been recruited and asked to leave the classroom for leadership roles; Lena stays because her passion is in the classroom and seeing the growth of her students is the best reward or gift a person can receive.

Lena’s recognition for her teaching skills working with some of Oklahoma City’s most challenged students include twice being voted KIPP Reach Teacher of the Year and joining a select group of teachers to receive the Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award, the highest honor a teacher in the KIPP Charter School National network of 200 plus schools can achieve for their work in the classroom.
Her teaching style is based on kinesthetic learning where students engage in the learning process through the use of movement, testing, trial and error and a non-traditional learning environment to help them retain and recall information. This teaching style has allowed her students to consistently score in the top percentile of the NWEA MAP Growth assessment.
Lena is active in her community and her church—she serves as a children’s Sunday school teacher and vacation bible school coordinator, and her personal pride is being a 200 plus blood platelet donor with the Oklahoma Blood Institute.

Nomination Committee Seeking Candidates

The Nomination committee has begun its work to select candidates to appear on the ballot in November for officers and directors for the 2022-23 Rotary year when Wes Milbourn will be President. The committee is carefully considering a pool of potential candidates who have been engaged club members and demonstrated an interest in leadership in the club. However, to ensure that we are making our selection from the deepest pool of qualified candidates, we would welcome anyone interested in serving to reach out.

If you are interested in being considered for a position on the ballot, please let Megan Law know by email no later than 5:00 pm on October 22. To be eligible, a club member must have been a member of Club 29 for at least three years at the time of the vote in November.

Answer the call and support the Rotary red Barn!

Our Annual OnePledge project is the ROTARY RED BARN at RestoreOKC located in Northeast Oklahoma City.  We need your help to raise $75,000 to build a multipurpose barn that will help RestoreOKC increase food access for this community of 34,000, expand fresh food production on a 5-acre urban farm, increase free home repairs for widows and seniors, and create jobs in the community!

This is the only time all year we ask ALL of our members to donate.  The OnePledge campaign also funds scholarships for Junior Rotarians and our Literacy Project. Our total goal is $100,000. Please watch the video to learn more about this incredible project and join us in supporting OnePledge!
