The Church of Baseball

by Charlie Smith
I am a diehard baseball fan. I’m old-school enough to even keep a scorecard at games, a dying art that seems invariably to draw attention and leads to newfound friends and conversations. My top bucket list dream was fulfilled in 2015 when I attended Game One of the 2015 World Series, watching my beloved Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets and capture the crown. (Mostly, including this year, the hapless Royals fit the description of the best minor-league team in the Major Leagues.)

On a baseball vacation in Boston, my wife and I stayed at the Boston Buckminster, the closest hotel to Fenway Park. In the hotel’s lobby is a plaque noting that on a September day in 1919, the Buckminster was the site where a baseball player and a bookie hatched the fixing of the World Series. F. Nominating Committee Seeks Candidates

The Nominating committee has begun its work to select candidates to appear on the ballot in November for officers and directors for the 2023-2024 Rotary year when Lesli Massad will be President. The committee is carefully considering a pool of potential candidates who have been engaged club members and demonstrated an interest in leadership in the club. However, to ensure that we are making our selection from the deepest pool of qualified candidates, we would welcome anyone interested in serving to reach out.
If you are interested in being considered for a position on the ballot, please let Megan know by email, no later than 5:00 pm on September 20. To be eligible, a club member must have been a member of Club 29 for at least three years at the time of the vote in November.
Sincerely,
Ellen Fleming - Chair
