The 2023-24 housing preferences are now open in your My Housing account. The Housing Assignments Office will use these preferences to assign you to a space later this summer. As a new student, you have the choice to select your roommate or be assigned one randomly. Read on to learn all you need to know about roommates at MSU.
Creating a Roommate Group
If you want to live with a specific roommate or suitemates, you must create a roommate group in your My Housing account at liveon.msu.edu. If you do not properly create and accept a roommate group, you will not be paired with your roommate. Here is what you need to do to create a roommate group:
-
Choose a "Group Leader" from your group of students. Anyone in your pair or group can be the Group Leader.
- Log in to your My Housing account and click on "Complete Housing Preferences and Update Roommate Group." You will need to first submit your Housing Preferences before moving to the roommate group screen.
-
The Group Leader will invite one, two or three additional students to join the group by providing their names and MSU emails. Students in Living-learning Communities will have limits to how many students they can add to their Roommate Group. See below for details.
- Once invited, the Group Members will receive an email with instructions to accept or decline the invitation in their My Housing account.
- All members of the roommate group must accept their invitations by June 7.
Finding a Roommate
No roommate? No problem! MSU has partnered with My College Roomie to offer roommate matching for incoming students. You should have received an email from My College Roomie to sign up and access the app. If you have not, visit liveon.msu.edu/roommate-matching. My College Roomie helps you find potential roommates, but it is not where you complete your roommate group. Once you find your roommate, remember to create your roommate group in My Housing!
Living-Learning Community Guidelines
Students who are in a Living-learning Community (LLC) will have specific housing locations and roommate requirements for their programs. If you are in an LLC, it is important to follow the guidelines of your community when forming your roommate group. Visit liveon.msu.edu/LLC-Guide for a full list of LLC roommate rules and housing locations.
Hierarchy of Assignment
When you fill out your housing preferences, keep in mind that certain preferences hold more priority than others. It's important to note that if your chosen preferences don't align, your roommate group may be split. The Housing Assignments Office will only break up a roommate group if the members' preferred housing choices do not align or there is an LLC requirement.
As you go through the roommate process, we encourage all students to have an open and honest conversation with potential roommates about their housing preferences and any academic program requirements.

We hope this information has been helpful in guiding you through forming a roommate group. Remember to follow the steps provided and contact us with any questions or concerns. Good luck, and we look forward to welcoming you to your new home at MSU!
