It was so wonderful to see so many guests on campus for Family Weekend just over a week ago! We're always excited to share all that make OHIO and Athens feel like home. Remember, Family Weekends are planned through next year so you can mark your calendars now — next up is Dads Weekend, October 31-November 2.
We’re a few weeks into the semester now, and your student likely already tackled their first exams. They may find that studying looks a little different year-to-year, but OHIO has plenty of academic resources to help them succeed.
As we enter fall, your student might be experiencing some homesickness, especially if this is their first semester away. I encourage you to work through these feelings with them and ask what they've done to get involved on campus. Remind your student to reach out to their Learning Community Leader, Resident Advisor or mentor if they are feeling disconnected. Those peer leaders are great sources of information on involvement. It can take a few weeks for them to find their people and adjust to this home away from home. Don't hesitate to reach out if we can support you in this journey.

Though not all Halloween events are hosted by the University, to keep things safe, Housing and Residence Life will be putting a few special measures in place. Resident Advisors will be hosting a community meeting sometime between Oct. 6-10. At this gathering, students get all the details about Halloween weekend, including important policies, procedures, and a chance to ask any questions. Find more info on guest policies, parking, and the required wristbands needed to enter the residence halls.

Suicide prevention resources for families |
As part of our comprehensive prevention efforts, we offer gatekeeper training on campus, such as Bobcats Who Care and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), to help students recognize warning signs and connect others with help. Families can get involved too — in a recent survey 58% of OHIO students said they would talk to a family member if they were experiencing serious emotional distress. QPR and other suicide prevention training is available virtually and free to Ohio residents through the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation.
