When We Get What We Don't Want

by Jim Priest
A Facebook post of a friend reminded of some of funny sayings uttered by kids when they don’t get what they want.

Tim described a time when his now adult son was a little guy demanding to be given some treat at the store. ‘No, we’re not buying that” my friend replied in his best Dad-boss tone.  To which his son replied, “Have things gotten that bad?”

Another friend told the story of his son who, years ago, was both an ardent disciple of television commercials and a firm believer in getting his own way.  The boy had watched TV commercials sponsored by the federal Housing and Urban Development agency advocating home ownership.  When his parents enforced a rule in the home he didn’t like the boy put on a grumpy face, crossed his arms and grumbled, “I’m gonna get me a HUD home!”

None of us always get what we want and sometimes we get what we don’t want. READ MORE

Rotary Club 29 Foundation Provides Teacher Grants Through Oklahoma City Public Schools Teacher Grant Fund

In 2023, the Rotary Club 29 Foundation, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City, established a $10,000 grant fund using domestic service project funds made possible through our Foundation’s annual spending policy. The “Oklahoma City Public Schools Teacher Micro-Grant Fund” is overseen by the Club’s Domestic Service Committee to award grants to teachers in the Oklahoma City Public Schools who submit grant requests using the Donor's choose platform (https://www.donorschoose.org/).

Each academic year, members of the Club’s Domestic Service Committee review and score grant applications submitted by OKCPS Teachers. The maximum award for any individual grant is $2,000 without any further approval needed from the Rotary Club 29 Foundation Board. The Committee has the discretion to consider each grant submission on its merits, but is encouraged to consider awarding grants for sustainable supplies or programs that will be used by a teacher or classroom for multiple years.

Rotarian Subscribers

In parts of the world, barriers to organ transplants are showing signs of weakening because of grassroots advocacy, changes in laws and policy, and early experimental treatments, granting the issue its biggest spotlight in years. In this month's Rotary magazine, we tell you about the members seizing on the moment to promote lifesaving donation.

August is Rotary's Membership and New Club Development Month. To celebrate, we're exploring one of the top reasons people join and stay in Rotary: friendship. We're learning from research how important friendship is to our health, yet a "friendship recession" has left many of us feeling disconnected. Meet the Rotary members turning a friendship recession into a friendship boom.

In the Our World section, we look at a novel project supported by Rotary clubs to sink an armada of decommissioned military ships and aircraft off the Mexican coast to form artificial reefs and support marine life. And finally, in this month's Handbook, you'll learn about the history of the peace pole movement and find tips on how your club can make a mark by dedicating one
