| Rotary Making An Impact In Our Community
What is the Reason for Rotary? Why does Rotary exist?
by Jerrod Shouse
After about a decade of membership in Rotary, I started pondering these questions, and what I believed the answer to be. And I have come to the conclusion that there is not just one singular answer.
When I first joined Club 29 fourteen years ago, Rotary was a great way for me to feel connected in our community. I immediately had the opportunity to fellowship with people from all over our city and from many different walks of life. I truly enjoy getting together once a week to hear a great speaker address issues of importance to our community or to our state. Everyone knows about our weekly meetings! To me, this fellowship is an important part of being a Rotarian.
But, Rotary is so much more than attending lunches and connecting with others. Over time, I realized that our club gives us the unique opportunity to collectively make an impact across Oklahoma City and in the world.
Last month, members of our club gathered at our November Rotary After Hours event to cut the ribbon on our 2021-2022 OnePledge Project, the Rotary Red Barn at Restore OKC. This large multi-purpose building will be a skilled trades and community space that Restore OKC will use to help provide hands-on job training and classes to allow those they serve to have an impact on their community. For all of us present, seeing the completed barn was a testament of how our members and our club make an impact in our community every day.
We are in the final stages of closing out our 2023-2024 One Pledge drive to fund the Dragonfly Home. If you have not yet pledged or given, I would encourage you to join me and the rest of our club members who have already answered the call. This is one of the best and easiest ways for our club to continue to build on our heritage of making an impactful difference in our community and in the world.

December 2023 - Rotary Magazine - The Food Issue
We're all just three missed meals away from experiencing food insecurity, it's been said. The global food system is straining under the triple crises of climate change, conflict, and COVID. In Rotary magazine's food issue, researcher Lisa Palmer takes us around the world to discover the ways farmers and ranchers are adopting regenerative and climate-smart agricultural practices. The author of Hot, Hungry Planet is more hopeful than ever that humankind will find a way not just to endure but to thrive. Read Article
Also this month, find out what it's like to try to collect a recipe from every country where there's a Rotary club Read Article The varied dishes tell of community, culture, and camaraderie.
The celebration of all things food continues with a group of Rotary members dedicated to plant-based diets (better for you, better for the environment). And we'll introduce you to the Rotarian who co-created the world-famous Cinnabon, and to a Rotary Peace Fellow who found that food is a catalyst for connection. Read Article
