Re:Act Group is a progressive, circuit-style small group class featuring dual task âexergamingâ challenges combined with strength and cardio exercises. This innovative and engaging style of training targets a wide range of cognitive and physical abilities including attention, concentration, memory, processing speed, executive function, coordination, reaction time, balance and stability, flexibility, and power.
Research has shown that such training can enhance brain health, improve performance of daily activities, and prevent or slow the loss of cognitive and physical abilities as a result of aging, injury and/or disease, especially in older adults.

Kathy Wall had her âaha momentâ a few years ago when despite her good health and relatively active lifestyle, she was diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis. Her doctor also mentioned that her blood pressure, A1C and cholesterol were starting to rise. Kathy knew it was time to shift into high gear before things got out of hand.
Kathy originally joined Active Wellness Center around the time she retired at age 71. She was fairly consistent on EGYM and other equipment but wasnât enjoying her workouts and ultimately stopped coming to the gym. She tried to stay active on her own, but soon realized how much strength she had lost when she had to ask for help saddling horses at the barn where she volunteers.Â
âI had always been strong so this was a wake-up call,â Kathy said. âI know at my age, things arenât going to get better on their own. I read somewhere that no matter how old a person is, muscle tone can always be increased. That was a real motivator!â
Kathy had always liked taking step, strength and Zumba classes so thatâs where she focused her efforts. âWhen I returned to the gym, I knew I wanted to take classes that incorporated music, movement and strength.â
Kathy has become a fixture in Cardio Fusion and LIFT & Balance classes since returning to the club last September after a nearly two-year hiatus.
âI love the instructors and the incredible people in my classes.â Not only is Kathy having fun and feeling better, her bloodwork has improved and now sheâs strong enough to saddle horses without help. âMy renewed fitness habits have definitely made me stronger and improved my balance.â
We asked Kathy what advice she would offer to those who are lacking motivation to get to the gym. âTry not to make your goals too grandiose. Be realistic. In the beginning come once maybe twice a week. Try new classes until you find one or two that âclick.â When you do youâll start coming more often and loving the results!â
Thank you for sharing your story, Kathy!

WHY DOES STRENGTH TRAINING HELP YOU LIVE LONGER? |
Strength training improves healthy aging by maintaining muscle mass which:Â
|
- Acts as a longevity organ:Â Muscle isnât just for looks; maintaining it keeps you strong, steady, and independent as you age.
-
Regulates your systems:Â A consistent routine improves metabolic health, regulates blood sugar, and supports hormone balance.
- Protects your skeleton:Â Lifting weights improves bone density, which protects against osteoporosis and age-related decline.
