DIRECTOR'S NOTE
Welcome to November! We have a busy month of events for all ages coming up at the Library, both in person and on Zoom, including: an amazing local panel discussion for the Friends of the Library's Annual Meeting; a Wine Glass Paint Night; Ask a Muslim Anything; Eyes on Owls; Henna Alchemy; and Choosing the College That's RIght for You.
We are also anticipating some disruption due to HVAC construction work - updates to the rooftop ventilation system may require periods where the 2nd and 3rd floors are inaccessible. Please give us a call if you would like to check on the building's current status before visiting, and thank you for your understanding.
MAINTENANCE WORK AT THE LIBRARY IN NOVEMBER
The Gleason Public Library is planning scheduled improvements to the HVAC ventilation system in upcoming weeks. The upper floors of the Library may be unavailable at times for patron safety during construction. The updated equipment will be more energy-efficient and use sensors to respond to fresh air ventilation needs in the building. Please check the Library’s website for information on current conditions daily.
LIBRARY CLOSINGS FOR NOVEMBER
The Gleason Library will be closed on Friday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day. The Library will be closing early on Wednesday, November 23 at 5 p.m. and remain closed through Friday, November 25 for Thanksgiving. We will reopen on Saturday, November 26 at 10 a.m. with our normal operating hours.

Led by art historian Jane Oneail, owner of Culturally Curious. Jane holds a Master’s in Art History from Boston University and a Master’s in Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She is a New Hampshire native and has worked at some of the state’s most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator.

FRIENDS OF THE GLEASON LIBRARY ANNUAL MEETING: CARLISLE PANDEMIC ANTHOLOGY—ONE YEAR LATER
Tuesday, November 15 | 7 p.m.
In late fall of 2021, local journalist Nancy Shohet West and community organizer Christine Lear interviewed 84 members of the Carlisle community about their experiences during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Interviewees ranged in age from 8 to 82 and included college students, new parents, people undergoing cancer treatment, the middle school principal, an EMT, a priest, a sixth grader, a professional musician, and more. The results were compiled into a book titled "Sorrows and Silver Linings: Global Pandemic in a Small Town," in December of 2021.

A year later, the Friends of the Gleason Public Library is presenting a panel discussion in which five project participants will revisit the stories they told, recount what has happened in the year since the book was published, and reflect upon what it meant to them to be part of this project. The five project participants highlighted include: Luke Gonzales, Deb Kablotsky, John Lyons, Dr. Matthew Mehler, and Susan Shaw.

Join us in a reflection on the strength of community during the pandemic and the power in sharing our stories at this annual meeting of the Friends of the Gleason Public Library. Please register at gleasonlibrary.org/events to reserve your seat or receive the Zoom link for remote viewing.

The Friends is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation made up of volunteers interested in supporting and enhancing the programs, services, and materials available to the community of Carlisle through Gleason Public Library. Our intent is to bring the people of Carlisle together to enjoy this great community resource.

ASK A MUSLIM ANYTHING
Wednesday, November 30 | 7 p.m.
Join Robert Azzi in the third-floor Hollis Room for a conversation about being a practicing Muslim in small-town New England. Mr. Azzi finds that most people - even those critical of Islam and Muslims - when engaged  in small scale or in one-one-one conversation, are willing to listen and engage with Muslims if that engagement occurs in what are perceived to be safe places: houses of worship, libraries, schools, civic organizations, etc. Azzi, a photojournalist, columnist and public speaker who lives in Exeter, NH, travels throughout New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine at the invitation of local communities to speak about his life, what it’s like to be Muslim in America, how he came to convert to Islam, about the religion of Islam and its history – especially in America – and about the Middle East, terrorism and associated political and social issues.
Nothing, except disrespect, is off the table.
This program is made possible by a grant from the Association for Rural & Small Libraries through the generosity of a regional partner foundation.
