Dear Colleagues and Friends of the Department,
It is hard to believe that Labor Day and the transition into the fall are right around the corner. It has been a busy summer with the sustained demand for our exceptional clinical services, arrival of new trainees, and uninterrupted research efforts in the midst of federal funding uncertainties and state budget challenges.
Securing the funding necessary to conduct impactful research is one of the biggest challenges for academic surgical departments. The bulk of this funding comes from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense and a myriad of private philanthropic foundations. The competition for these funds is fierce, and success is dependent on a number of other factors, not the least of which is the ability to navigate the complex regulatory and application processes. While bold and creative ideas and the commitment of our faculty are the cornerstone of conducting impactful research, their success is facilitated by a team of individuals who often work under the radar. In this month’s newsletter, we take the time to introduce you to critical members of this team, including Eastern Kang, Ph.D., Terence Doherty and Jessica Johnston, who provide statistical, administrative and other support to our faculty and research trainees.
In addition, we are happy to highlight the accomplishments of Aleah Brubaker, M.D., Ph.D., and Peter Than, M.D., who received the Pearl-Hannah Scholar Award to fund critically important work in the optimization of organs for transplantation, and also Mahmoud Malas, M.D., M.H.S., and Mohammed Hamouda, M.D., who were recently highlighted in the Vascular Specialist newspaper for their research on carotid operations. These teams are examples of the extraordinary work that is occurring every day in the department, and a reflection of our efforts to make tomorrow better for patients.
Additionally, we hosted our Resident Research Boot Camp and welcomed our new fellows in cardiothoracic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, pediatric surgery, acute care surgery, pediatric surgical critical care, surgical critical care and vascular surgery. In our alumni spotlight, Sohini Khan, M.D., a recent general surgery residency graduate, spoke on the vigor of our training programs. Our training programs continue to set the standard for academic surgical excellence, preparing the next generation of surgeons to lead, innovate and advance patient care.
May you have a restful end to your summer. And, as always, thank you for your continued support and engagement with the department.

“I just graduated residency, so it feels weird thinking of myself as an alumna already. When I started medical school, I would have thought there was no way I would be here right now, having survived the gruel of surgical residency. There were times that I struggled with my confidence, skills and imposter syndrome. However, some of my favorite memories, especially during chief year, have been seeing my own progress in the operating room.
Surgical training has helped me learn skills to be a doctor in the fullest sense. I’m grateful for the experience and the mentorship I’ve received here at UC San Diego.”
