| TANASI Worldgrass Trio

TANASI is a worldgrass trio based in Asheville, North Carolina, channeling global folk traditions through the drive, textures, and close harmonies of an Appalachian string band.

This summer Professor Ofer Ben-Amots directed the two-week International Summer Academy of Music (ISAM) in Ochsenhausen, Germany. ISAM brings young, gifted musicians together from across the globe for lessons, workshops, masterclasses, lectures, and concerts in the unique setting of a Benedictine Monastery.

Participation is limited to 12 pianists, 12 composers, and 12 organists. The program culminates in a competition with prizes and scholarships in each of the three categories. CC alum Eric Ponsky ’22 won third place in the composition category.

The Academy celebrated its 40th anniversary with a production of Ben-Amots’ multimedia chamber opera, The Dybbuk. The Dybbuk is inspired by S. An-sky's timeless Yiddish play, The Dybbuk: Between Two Worlds. The play’s subtitle indicates the duality at the center of this haunting drama, which holds in tension life and death, the demonic and angelic, the natural and supernatural, and ancient traditions and modernity. There are at least 35 different operas and ballets based on this epic play, but Ben-Amots’ differs from all previous interpretations in telling the story from the woman’s point of view, in stark contrast to the original play, where the strictly orthodox community allows her no rights to express her wishes, hopes, or dreams. Professor Ben-Amots is teaching Composition in Block 1. Don’t miss this opportunity to study with a living legend!
