Preventing the Spread of Illness

As we welcome the spring season and begin enjoying many large campus events, we’d like to highlight strategies each of us can use to prevent the spread of gastrointestinal (GI) and respiratory illnesses. CC continues to use a public health framework for disease prevention, monitoring, and response that is informed by evidence-based practices established by the World Health Organization and local public health resources.

The primary strategy to prevent spread of all GI and respiratory viruses is through practicing good hand hygiene and staying up to date with recommended vaccines, including flu and COVID vaccines.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a GI virus (including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea), we recommend you take the following steps:

  • Stay home or in your room and exclude yourself from all school activities and classes for at least 48 hours after vomiting and diarrhea symptoms have resolved.
  • Use hand soap and water to clean your hands. Hand sanitizer is not effective in killing GI viruses, including norovirus.
  • Use cleaning products approved by the EPA for GI viruses, including norovirus. Cleaning kits are available at the front desk of all dormitories.
  • Seek medical care if you experience severe symptoms for over 24 hours or are experiencing signs of dehydration.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a respiratory infection (including cough, fever, nasal congestion), we recommend you take the following steps:

  • Stay home or in your room and away from others while you have symptoms.
  • Wear a mask and physically distance from others.

Students: Our on-campus Student Health Center is available for appointments Monday-Friday and can often accommodate same-day appointments. For after hours and weekend medical care, consult our website for nearby providers.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our campus community safe and healthy. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to wellness@coloradocollege.edu with questions.
