Greetings from Florida's lake and grove region
El Campeon -- the Champ!
SGA Returns to the Sunshine State
Senior Golfers returned to Mission Resort, formerly Mission Inn, in February of this year, and found one of their favorite destinations just as welcoming as ever.
The event began with drinks and dinner on the balmy patio of the fine-dining El Conquistador, named for the original Spanish settlers in this part of Florida. at one time known as New Spain. Newcomers Cindy Potter and Steve & Vivian Wright were welcomed to the SGA group.
SGA Pebble Beach winner Carole Sudar, was again winner for the ladies. "I loved the golf courses and the people here," said Carol. "This trip is my valentine's gift from my husband John. We enjoy the SGA trips very much and love experiencing different areas of the country, especially when it's COLD at home in Pennsylvania!"
Winner for the men was newcomer  Steve Wright. "I enjoyed the event very much," said Steve. "You guys were very welcoming, and I am looking forward to seeing everyone again soon."
Best Ball of Team awards went to Carol Sudar, Cindy Potter, and Rob Potter. Both Steve and Vivian Wright won the special Close to Pin prizes from the Mission Resort Pro Shop, but Vivian was the one who confessed to ending up with "an outfit." We want to see your Close to Pin fashion at the next event, Vivian!  Congratulations to all!
Can you see Vivian and Catherine on the green?
SGA Members Cindy & Rob Potter invite us to become a part of their impressive charity.

Honduras Hope

Cindy and Rob Potter are congenial SGA members and avid golfers, and also, there is another side to this golfing duo. For the past twenty years they have brought their fellow medical professionals and other volunteers to make an annual trip to Honduras, bringing medical and educational support to poverty-stricken Hondurans through their non-profit, Honduras Hope Mission.
Rob is the current president, and Cindy is past president, of the Mars, Pennsylvania-based foundation. Long interested in global health, Cindy is a physical therapist, and Rob is a retired physician. The week-long project they are a part of each year has served nearly 2000  children and adults in rural Honduras.
The Potters attended the SGA Florida event just a few weeks after their most recent trip to Central America. Together with their team in Honduras, they visited seven clinics, assessing health issues, distributing water filters, medical devices, eyeglasses, dental needs, and medicines.
What a wonderful family we have in Senior Golfers of America! For those who would like to help Cindy and Rob in these impressive endeavors by donating, spreading the word, or volunteering, visit hondurashopemission.org, or email Cynthia at sgagolfers@gmail.com, for further contact information.
Muchas Gracias to all who serve...

Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler! Win an SGA Prize!

We know that all Senior Golfers recognize both The Hound (l) and Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones (wink, wink) above.

However, if you look closely, you will see that actually, these are two well-liked SGA members who have been on several trips with the group. The pic was snapped right before they boarded their Mardi Gras float this year.

If you can identify these real-life characters, just reply to this email. We will get your prize out to you as soon as possible.

Congratulations, Ken!

In further Mardi Gras news, on February 28,  SGA Hall of Fame member Ken Rabalais recorded an ace  on #9 of Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana.

This was Ken's fourth hole-in-one, and also it was the day after his 77th birthday!  Congratulations, Happy Birthday, and Vive Le Bon Temps ---- or something like that!

South Carolina Wildfires

Many thanks to all who have reached out to SGA Director Cynthia Swanson regarding the wildfires in her home area. The fires were only about twenty minutes by car from where she lives, and of course closer as the crow flies. However, the wind has not been blowing due east during all the time of the fires and the ensuing smoke so she has not been affected as those in some other directions.
The go-to authority on all area weather is longtime local TV weatherman, Ed Piotrowski, who has been featured previously in the SGA newsletter. Ed lives in Carolina Forest, the adjacent neighborhood to the biggest wildfires. As of today, he reports that thick smoke is back again on certain streets, but once east of where the burning started, the smoke was not noticeable.
The fire's containment remains at 55%. The rain Tuesday has helped, but it won't put out the various smoldering hot spots, so firefighters and first responders will continue mopping up for days to come. Smoke will also be intermittent for the foreseeable future. Who sees what and how much totally depends on the wind direction. Thankfully, structures near hot spots are not in danger, thanks to various agencies protecting them.
Over the weekend Ed featured the above video, which is very interesting with the helicopter and rainbow over the Intracoastal Waterway.
